RB25DET Powered 240sx

What do you guys think? 250hp stock, single turbo, bullet-proof bottom-end. Capable of 600hp on stock internals, 1000 on stock bottom-end. Bigger turbo, injectors and a boost controller and you'd be at 400whp.

Realizing the power goals I want for the cav ain't gonna happen, I've decided to get an S13 (89-94 240sx) and swap a skyline motor into it. The swap is very easy as long as you get the front clip from the skyline, which costs under 4K shipped, and are readily avail. I would still keep the cav as a DD tho. Haha, having a supercharged DD, thats funny lol.....But what are your opinions on this?

if the 240 is rear drive, and the skyline is all wheel drive, how are you going to make this work? doesnt the RB motor have the front drive shafts pretty much going through the motor? i could be wrong.

Some Skylines came in only a RWD application.

I say go for it. There is a guy running around my area with a white s13 with the same motor swap done. It's definitely a tight fitting engine bay when I saw it in person.

Have a good one,
Justin

if you've got the money, do it.... S13 is an awesome platform, and the RB series engine is badass.

going to go RHD? i would

I helped a friend swap the SR20 turbo motor from a rhd 180 sx front clip and it wasn't too bad

The swap isn't impossible, but, you're going to need a LOT of parts from the Skyline, and a custom drive shaft.

The RB motors going into the 240/180/s13 chassis isn't unheard of, but it's not as common as the SR20DET motor swap, so bare that in mind when you start looking for parts. I believe there is a swap guide @ http://www.240sx.org so try there first.

I've seen a worked over RB26DETT (switched to a single Turbo, I think it was making 650/700 HP on 94 Gas) shoehorned into the S13, but it really was unbalanced... the back-end would light up and dance all over the place.

Oh... as if it needed to be said: you'll want an LSD in the rear... The USDM open dif and even the JDM/CDM Viscous Limited Slip Dif's tend to evaporate under prolonged load.

boosted LS1/LQ4/LQ9 in RX7 IMO. But if you already have the nissan, then just put one of those engines in that.

600 wheel on stock bottom end of an rb25? nope. not happening. Ringlands will take a @!#$ way before that happens. 450 sounds more normal and even though u better be on one hell of a tune.

the swap is NOT EASY TO DO AT ALL in an s13. u obviously have done no research in this. Just cuz u have a front clip doesn't mean u have everything. in order to do an rb25 swap u will need:

Rb25 motorset
mchinny or top hat mounts
Custom driveshaft
mchinny or top hat tranny mount/adaptor
speedo recalibration OR use the rb25 cluster which i hear is bitch to wire in.
Forget AC
Power steering has to be mocked up
custom 3 inch downpipe (which can be bought or made)
Bigger radiator
e fans

Rb's will overheat on stock s13 rads even with most cooling fans.

let alone if u wanna do it right, replacing majority of the gaskets and belts is really a must.

All this for 240hp to the wheels.

right there alone is over $6500 worth of @!#$, let alone the engine is a pain in the ass to get in from the top. obviously u can't put the engine and tranny in seperately cuz the tranny tunnel is to small. U also have to beat ur fire wall to make the starter fit even with the mount kits, in some instances.

i don't advise this swap to anyone who is new to it. An rb20 might better suit ur needs and doesn't require nearly as much custom stuff and still is a very strong platform and sounds great.

Is it worth it? yes, the rb's are amazing engines, especially the 26. but its def not for the person whose in a rush or on a budget.

ahh just reread it. yea 600 wheel has been achieved before but its borrowed time on a rb25. And just so u know... there is more to it then turbo, controller and injectors.. u will need something to tune it with cuz the stock ecu isn't gonna like all that air.

I've driven a built up SR20DET swapped 240 (400 hp I think it was pegged at)... I know all about that The guy that built it put the battery, Amps, Nitrous tanks... everything he could as far back as possible to re-balance the car to 50/50... and then he found out his stock VLSD evaporated.

sr20det's are weak for torque though. rb's and ka's make much better torque. a 2500 (with driver and gas) pound car with torque is a nice feeling.

On a side note, an rb20det hardly throws off the weight balance of an s13 as compared to a rb25 or 26. the 20 has a much smaller tranny and weighs about 130 pounds less then a 25.

Just food for thought.

and yes, that 240 looks like @!#$. although Hinson Performance are just starting to make a mount kit for an ls1 swap.... that much be in the future for me if i get another s13.

does it already have the the s13 headlights or are you doing that swap also?

For the amount of time, effort and $$$ youll have into the RB, you could just build up a SR20 and get damn near your goals if not more. SR is way easier to get parts for anyhow.

^ very true. But an sr is way overplayed and in all honesty as a stock long block really not that great of a design, especially in the head. But like every nissan engine, has exceptional potential to produce mass amounts of power and a decently strong stock bottom end.

yeah the SR is a bit over played, but when it comes to bang for the buck, the SR is what ya want.

I just decided on getting a 240 for the same reason. I was looking at doing the RB swap but it requires a lot of custum stuff so I have decided on the standard SR swap, right now I'm looking at either getting my stuff from Enjuku Racing or Projeckt7.

other then the rb25 weighing in at 170lbs more, its a great swap. the only problem is that if you use the stock mounts. the engine will sit about 2 inchs higher then it should, and the shifter will be about an inch and a half further forward(twards the dash) then it should. i cant remeber the name of the company but they make a swap kit for the rb engines. they also make reflashed ecu's that will work with the swap as well(im currently looking into to same swap haha) something else intresting i saw is they are starting to make a swap kit for the 2JZ into the S13/S14 chassie well. hope thats helpful.

umm as far as i know the rb25 can not be mounted on the stock crossmember, unless u redrill the member and such... which is very ghetto in my opinion. I would use an rb20xmember and if the engine sits higher most people shim their hood. which is also ghetto in my opinion. do it right or not at all.

i just mentioned it above... Mckinney and top hat make kits... also on zilvia.net a sponser makes a new kit as well... supposed to be better... think its like 1200 bucks or something.
