They're prone to electrical problems, from what I hear too. Car is a little high in mileage for the asking price, but it does look clean from the pics. Get yourself signed onto a Cougar forum and ask them, they'd be able to give out a lot more information about problems/price.

I haven't had my cavalier a month yet, but when I saw it in the autotrader and set up a meet with the seller I started reading this forum heavily looking for common problems that might steer me clear of the car. I also searched various auto parts stores for replacement part pricing because some cars cost a lot more to repair for the same thing. All I can say is I hope my fuel pump or rack and pinion don't go out.

They're slow as hell too, I've driven them, the 6 cylinder felt slower than my gf's 2200.

I dunno, my GF has one and im sure its faster than my old sunflower was with a 5 speed. I wouldnt call it fast by any stretch of the imgination though lol. But her cougar hasnt given her one problem at all and its got 85K on it.

slow and yes problematic. my ex had one and it went through 3 manual trans. and had other issues with the alternator. she got rid of it w/ 65K miles.

not slow, haul ass, and very few problems. Alot of J owners are going to say the cougar is slow. Honestly it got alot more usuable power in everyday driving , with more low end torque. you dont have to floor it to get going. if your into the 1/4 mile racing a few guys here locally were in the high 15's to low 16's depending on if they were 5sp or auto... reliablity is pretty decent. they are nice cars, and a definate step up from an economy car.

Whats a Cavalier?

I wouldn't call high 15's/low 16's "hauling ass". It's about what ecos run, which isn't very good for a car that's supposed to be so sporty, especially with a V6.

I'm looking at one too. They are nice cars. Anything has to be faster than my 2.0L Slowbird.

We had 1996 XR7. Good power for the type of car that it is. However, we had a lot of electrical problems, and then finally got rid of the car after the front end basically fell apart with no warning.

I've always been a fan of the 60's Cougars, and the newer style FWD ones (at least in their apperance). However, I would never have another one like the one we had. It just wasn't worth the headaches.

The last body style of cougers w/ the tiny v6 were slow and electricaly unsound. I never lost to one in the cav.

This does seem to be what I've heard several times. However, the body styling was darn nice!!

my ex gf had one. The interior feels even cheaper then ours does. Power is anemic even with the 2.5 IMO. My 2.4 5 speed RAN from her car...bad. Hers was an auto. She too had/has alternator problems. And the location of the alternator is STUPID. If it goes out, it'll cost you a ton, or be a complete pain in your ass to replace. I HIGHLY suggest walking away from them....and I also own a ford, so I'm not biased. Oh, and the backseat is HORRID. I hate riding in it more then 20 minutes. It's only a 4 seater and the back 2 seats SUCK

so...one last reminder...DON'T DO EEEEETT. Depreciation value might be worse then a cav...which is a tough feat. I'd go import LONG before I went with a cougar. I told my ex you were thnkin about it, I'm supposed to tell you, "HELL motha fuggin no!"
