Intake and Exhaust gains on a Cobalt SS/SC

I posted this on cobaltss.net, but I figured I would post this info. on here as well!

Friday, Nov. 25th I had three 3rd gear dyno pulls on a chassis dyno...

My stock baseline run the car put down 214.3hp @ 6408 rpms and 188.2tq @ 5200 rpms in Aug. 05'

The results of the 3 dyno pulls with intake and exhaust are 232.2hp @ 6379 rpms and 208.29tq @ 5089 rpms.

That is roughly 17.9hp and 20.9tq increase!! Which I think is very impressive with just an intake and exhaust!

I'm very satisfied with the way the car reponded to these simple mods!

I have a K&N Typhoon CAI and a Magnaflow 2.5" Cat-back exhaust installed.

All dyno sessions were done on a chassis dyno and all were 3rd gear pulls.

why third gear?
isnt fourth 1:1?
dynoing in third just inflates your numbers.

still a nice improvement

other cars, better cars?

gm's releasing the staged packages soon too new ecu program (stage 1)and a smaller pulley (pulley and tune) for the super charger they say something like 40 hp 20 lb ft improvement on stage 2 over stock and it's bearly a bolt on thats without intake and exahust maybe they will be able to match the srt-4 for power without turning a wrench or very little of it

actually none of the cobalts gearing is near a 1:1 4th gear is a bit closer but still off, people dyno 200+ whp in 3rd but not 200 whp in 4th 190-198 from what I have seen, either way a gain is a gain

Exactly a gain is a gain! But, the place I dyno'd at said they rather dyno cars in 3rd....

certain cars they should, certain cars they shouldnt, like a 2000-2005 sunfire or cavalier 4th gear is .98:1 ratio...

Of course they would. That way, the numbers are increased, which makes customers happy and coming back
I say try another dyno shop and see what you can do there...

nice gain man that's pretty good.....

hey mark where did you dyno at??? i might take the eco there for a few baseline runs before i boost it

it doesn't matter what gear it is.... if he got 12 hp in 3rd gear added some mods and then got 22 hp in 3rd gear you still know how much of a gain you got... if you look this thread is about the GAIN from intake and exhaust... not wow look what I dyno'd. as long is the dyno's are cone consistant you will see what the gain is.

So what about which gear it is in? Wouldn't the final axle ratio affect it, along with tire size?

O noes!

Not really. Dyno's are designed to measure horsepower and torque regardless of the gearing or final drive ratio.

The only reason they dyno in 3rd or 4th is to try and get closest to a 1:1 drive ratio, which gives more accurate results. So it could be a difference of 3-5WHP, nothing too significant.

You always have to make a wiseass comment don't you. Take a hint: It gets annoying after a while.

some people need to learn about control groups. Since he stayed in third for both runs and his tire size and all that garbage didn't change, it is still an accurate measurement of how much hp he gained. blah blah blah, not bashing on anyone just wanted to add my dos pecos i remember from 3rd grade science class.

Nick, thanks, Car Version 2 it is next to the new Walmart near Prices Corner. Are you gonna go with the GM S/C kit? Or, are you gonna turbo?

That was done with an intake and a catback exhaust, not full? Very nice indeed.

i understand what he gained
but its still off of from what he really gained

instead of 1:1 say its 1.21:1
that mean he dynoes at 121%of his real power
now adding mods
it will still be at 121% but the differance will be greater

and you should dyno in the gear closest to 1:1

as i said before nice gains but id rather see a 4th gear pull

and i learned about control groups in at the latest 8th grade thank you
that was not my point
if you want control groups you need just that, groups, not just one
you would need several cars to dyno stock
then dyno them w/ the modifications to see what you would gain on average

and as you read, the percentage will make a difference in the hp gained

other cars, better cars?
