max effort circle track engine. 2.2 or 2200?
Monday, June 13, 2011 3:42 PM
building a new circle track car. I have to use the stock intake manifold, stock air box, cylinder head casting, exhaust manifold etc... I've read and read and still not sure whats better for what I am trying to do. Would I be better off using the 97 and earlier 2.2 or the 98 and later 2200. I want to use hp tuners to tune it as well. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

97 and previous, 98 and newer is less horsepower because of emissions. I run a 1995 2.2 on my track and the 98 2.2 cant keep up to me even on the straigtaways.

Read Bob Guptill's build-up thread. Bob retained the pre'98 block, heads, etc..., with the '98+ pistons, which will net approximately 12:1 compression ratio. As for the TB, if you can get away with it, get it bored over to 56mm and use the throttle blade from a 2.3L Quad4. There's not a lot that can be done with the stock exhaust, except open up the ports outlet a small amount and blend it with the doughnut gasket, if you retain it (if not then open it up even more). If you retain the hydraulic roller cam, that need to get a good regrind, otherwise convert to a flat mechanical. Comp cams makes the 26981 valve spring, which is a drop in replacement for the older motor and can handle up to .520" lift and all the rpms you most likely be able to run.

There's more, when I can get the time.

Thanks madjack. that was a good read. I have a decently built 94 motor and a stock 97 I bought. thinking about selling both of those and doing one nice 98+ engine if the 98's have a better intake, head, and exhaust manifold. I wish i could switch it over to a carb like Bob's but i doubt they would let us do that. We have to run the factory air box system too. thanks for the tip on the throttle body.

If you can run a 2.3/2.4 do it. I can tell you this with 100% certainty. I have built the motor you are talking about and have about $3000 in it total and still less HP than a stock 2.4. You will be out powered by the twin cams!

Look for madjacks thread on rocker arms. You can run small block chevy stamped steel 1.6 and no one would be able to tell. Also you can look up his thread on rebuilding the stock lifters. I did this and it was an easy mod.

use the 95-97 2.2 efi head, shave your head 10,000, z24 5speed tranny, with a 98 block. i run this set up in my car and people cant touch me with the sfi block and the efi head put together the hp adds up. the z24 tranny helps out with the pull off the corners.

It'd be better if you could run a twin cam, I know the track rules here only dictate that you have 4 cylinders, and engine and trans (all components) must match the car so no swapping different trans and such... they're more than happy to ban you for trying to find loopholes and such here...
