Autocross spring season
Sunday, February 12, 2006 10:09 AM
It has just started and it is a blast. I had a lot of fun and it was a record turn out. It was my second time doing an autocross, the first in my new car. Each time i went out to the course i ran better or cleaner trying to figure out the course. It was pretty technical. I ended up 7th out of 14. As far as I saw I was the only one on oems out of the first 7. I think I did pretty good but im sure I could have done better. All I need is some more seat time.

7 out of 14? like there were only 14 people there?

get someone experienced to ride with you and watch how you drive. Can't really give too many tips without actually seeing how you drive.

Biggest things:
Look Ahead, the gate your passing thru or about to pass thru has no bearing on your line you want to be looking up the course to see where your going. This sounds simple but after 2 seasons of autox I'm only just starting to realize how much of an effect it has on your time and how smooth you are, not to mention just how difficult it is to force yourself to look far ahead.

Stay calm, slow is fast, this is an undisputable fact in racing.

Street tires talk to you, if their not squealing in a turn it means you can go a little faster because their not losing any grip. If you hear some slight squeling when taking a turn but the car isn't over or understeering your right on the edge of the tires limit.

You'll know when you have a good run because your whole body will be shaking ever so slightly afterwards due to the adrenaline pumping thru your system.

Don't worry about being too competitive with other racers right now, you are your greatest competition as of now. Also take advantage of their experience as they'll give it freely to you....until you become competition for them.

After doing half the season on street tires get yourself some R-compounds on stock sized rims, also add some AGX's, D-specs, or koni yellows.

I think it is better to run, at the very least, a good full season before putting R-compounds on the car. Wait to upgrade your suspension as well.

If you can learn to make the car fast with insane amounts of body roll, you will be faster with your upgrades than trying to learn to drive with upgrades on your car(since they tend to mask your mistakes).

Thanks guys for all your help. I am right now a student and cannot afford to buy any expensive things, but i can afford to go every event day.
