Hey everybody,
I just registered and I'm glad to say i was able to find a board on this car. I presently own a 2001 Pontiac Grand Prix GT which I dearly love. It is hands down the nicest car I've ever owned and having a message board as a resource has been an immense help. Info for mods and maint has been tremendous. At any rate I am approaching my mid-life crisis (or is 50 just plain over the hill?)...I've been hankering and whining for a convertible for some time now and with the price of gas not heading down any time soon (not ever I think) I've been hunting a more economical option. My 1st choice was a Firebird but they are turning into collector items it seems (or at least their prices say so) I've also checked out Chysler Sebrings and PT Cruisers (those engine bays are nightmares)...and the Mustang Ponies, which are nice but still a little pricey. I'm not looking to spend a killing since I still want to have some bucks to keep modding my GP.
I've got my eye on a 1999 Sunfire GT convertible, which I found online and I may go have a look at this weekend. Is the 2.4L four a reliable engine?...ditto for the 4spd auto trans?...did GT models come with 4 wheel disc brakes? Are there any problem areas I need to look out for?
Thanks in advance for any info,
2.4L is very reliable, it is NOT a Quad4 or the 2.3 that people have head gasket issues with. Reliability however is greatly dependent on how its been cared for.
The 4 speed transmission is extremely reliable as well. GT's (or any other trim for the J-Body) did not come with 4 wheel disc brakes. The rears are drums, fronts are disc.
Things you should look for:
Water coming out of the weep hole on the water pump (passenger side, back of the engine, all the way down on the inside of the timing chain cover)
Noise or looseness in the wheel bearings. Not a sale-killer, the bearings are ~$75 and take about an hour to change out
Well, I could go on and on, but just read this:

Welcome timothy. As far as age it doesn't matter here, we pretty much all have the same interests.
