The Sickness: I have it.
Wednesday, June 22, 2011 9:12 AM
I haven't posted actively in a long LONG time for personal reasons... but I've always been around checking out the forums and sending PM's to people that needed help.

After years of promising myself I'd never mod another J and beating and stamping my feet and badgering Darren like a child about modifying his daily driver - here I am again.

So many reasons flew through my head and heart to not do this... but so many other *better* reasons came up that I couldn't pass up the opportunity.

Last August I drove up to Parry Sound (5 hour drive) to pick up a car that - for all intents and purposes - I would have built exactly as I picked it up. It's a little rough around the edges, and it needs some love and paint - but I knew the second I merged onto the highway in 3rd gear I'd found what I lost so many years ago with Sweetness - a fun, fast, unique and RELIABLE J-body that I could enjoy.

J-bodies... modding... it's a disease. It invades your immune system and makes you do stupid things like spend money on turbochargers and drag radials and 6 lb rims to lower reciprocating mass. It's a sickness... and I have it again. 3 minutes in this car infected me, and I have the biggest sh!t-eating grin on my face because of it - even a year later.

This is my #2 now... may I introduce - Sickness. These are some photos from the last year - from me changing out the shatty tan interior to fixing the garbage H.O manifold install to a few photoshoots to attending the JCO bash this past Saturday.

Yes the engine has mods (almost every bolt-on possible), and I bought it in much of its current form but as most of you know I couldn't drive a tricycle without making it mine somehow so I've made quite a few changes to it.

I hope you enjoy - I know I have.

Comments etc. always welcomed.

Thanks for the comments so far everybody.

Just to clear the air - I have NOT sold or gotten rid of Sweetness. She sits in my garage awaiting a few parts, but is in good waxed / engine polished condition waiting to run again someday. I have a few plans for upgrades before that car comes back out, it just takes $$ I don't have right now - but the desire is there.

Many ppl assume I'm going to transplant the driveline into this car or boost it or SOMETHING - and while the thought of a GMSC creeps into my head here and there I don't plan to either molest Sweetness for parts or boost this car whatsoever. I wanted a reliable daily driver that I could enjoy - for almost a year this car has proven to be just that. Why mess with what works?

And yes Brad, def an LD9. It has Secret Cams, Cloyes timing set, ported & Matched H.O manifold from Sweetness (I have that new polished one for the other car now), 2.3 H.O TB, Intake, Mounts, RK Sport 4-2-1 header, 2.25" Exhaust, MSD-DIS 2, UR Underdrive pulley and soon - a Tune. I'm curious to see if I can pull down a 14.8 - 14.9 in it.

His old car got sold to our buddies GF believe it or not, she ran it low on oil and the motor spun the #3 rod bearing. She swapped in a new 2.4 and is still driving it.

Not sure whatever became of the old motor that was in there....probably scrapped. Did you want the cams? I could ask around for you to see if she still has the motor kicking around somewhere...if so PM me.

OP: car looks good dude....hopefully see it in person one day.

I was wondering when you were gonna post this.
Is it bad that your beater is alot better than some peoples #1 cars on here? lol
We will definately cruise this summer once Leona is done.

Very nice

LOVE the gauges

DSMSKyline - Would you believe those are EBAY reverse glow gauges? I painted the needles red with a sharpie marker... lol. The gauges aren't autometer, they are Glow-Shift 7-colour gauges. The combo almost matches 100% perfectly I have everything setup with red needles and whitish blue backlighting.

And we'll def cruise this summer Darren... maybe even line up on JCO Track day.

The only changes that I had in mind were to repaint the front end and skirts and rear lip since they were badly painted by the previous owners, add a carbon fiber bezel for the dash so it matches the CF pillars and door thresholds and shift knob, get proper coilover suspension for the car, and tune it. Personally I LOVE the way the car looks as it sits.

If I get ambitious, I've been watching some of the brake upgrades in the suspension forum, those STI Rotors and the saturn setup look tempting... but this really isn't the car I want to be spending $$ on.
