ewwww...
i hope there is some fiberglass under all that resin.
I hope it even fits those things are expensive to replace. and by the looks of it looks like the speaker rings is going to hit the window.
There is 3 layers of fiberglass under both sides of resin. I'll make it fit you'll see.
Post pictures after you do the test fit, i'm interested in this. I need a place to put some tweeters.
Even if it does fit you may want to go ahead and run fiberglass to reinforce that whole piece. They are prone to crack and if your luck is anything like mine after its installed for a week it may just decide to break.

Yea it didn't fit lol. I put it in and it was touching the wind shield (not good)
So I shaved it all down and reinforced it. I'm bondoing it up now. Probably won't look as sexy not but it'll fit. I'll post more pictures as it gets closer to finish.
Here she sits as of tonight.
Moar bondoing and sanding tomorrow. Maybe I can fit it tomorrow some time.
don't put to much bondo on that.
that has potential. i dont see any drill holes though. did you just toss glass over top of the piece?
I made a circle the size of the speaker out of this hard poster board stuff. Then cut little pieces and hot glued them to put the back part higher than the front. After it was all secure I stretched felt over it and saturated that with resin. It went over everything.
Next I put on 3 layers of mat, then 2 layers of resin on top of those to make it very smooth.
I dremeled out the holes to get the speakers to fit.
I can't find a good filler primer anywhere so It is making this much harder for me :p

O'reilly's has like 3 different kinds that I generally use, comes in a gray can that says high build primer

BTW: This is my Sig.
I don't have any o-reilly's by me
The hardware store by me didn't have it and anywhere else I go they ask me for an ID. I'm only 17 so it means I'm gonna sniff a 7 dollar can of spray paint.
try autozone and have your parents buy it for you or something
Autozone and checker both don't have what I want in stock. I bought all their good stuff lol. Walmart has it but its across town so I won't make my parents go get it. I'll get it finished without it..
Here she is. Sorry for the messy blurryness. Rainex wasn't having a good friendship with the camera.
I recommend this mod to ANYONE that has the time and skill. It improves the sound quality by like 300%. I feel like I'm sitting in a bmw with bose speakers.
It looks very clean in person, the pics don't do the justice.
To anyone else trying this; here are my tips so you don't make the mistakes I did..
Get filler or etching primer before hand
Plan on this being a project that will take a few days to do
Test fit like 5 times before starting to fiberglass.
Cover the windshield with like 2 layers of duct tape around the areas that you cut the metal shielding on the car. The bits etch away at the windshield very easy. I touched it once in the corner for a split second and it make a mark
When cutting the shielding don't use fiberglass reinforced disks, use the brownish stone type ones. They shatter a lot easier but cut a lot quicker! I went through about 8 or 9 cutting both slots out.
Lastly, wire the speakers to the front speakers in a SERIES. It sounds much better.
Glad it's finished
You are messing with impedance when you add speakers to the same circuit. I wouldn't have done that. I would only recommend going out of your way to put speakers up there if you are doing sound comps with amped separates or an upstage kit. But if you enjoy the sound, that's good. It looks like the bottom of the speaker is not attached and kind of sitting "up" though.
On the other hand....you have other fingers.

not to bad for it being your first time ever fiberglassing just looks a little rough and unfinished. i'd pull it out and get the waves out clean up the shape a bit and make sure its 100% before you call it done. and comparing it to a stock bose system in a bmw isn't that great of a review. jl audio hit upon the impendence issues, i'd try to run them on their own amp versus off the stock headunit.

I have to say that doesn't look bad. I think it would be easier to do the the dash replacement insert that they make now. I think I would prefer just putting a set of tweeters up there, and still having the mids in the door. But all around I think it looked pretty good, especially for your first project. Hope I do as good m first try.
