then do that. all he said was post a pic of the shift knob that you bought. if some people look at it, they might be able to tell you how to install it.
sndsgood, it still means that he has to install it. This is the same guy that didn't know to unplug the cigarrette lighter adapter from his "plug-in" Autozone neons in order to turn them off. Now I'm not sure, but I think as the difficulty level ramps up, so does the margin of error! Since this site is here to help people, I think that maybe the first thing he should buy would be the Chilton's manual, and a big cup of coffee. Settle in for some reading, and then start over with the modding process. JMHO.

if you bought it at autozone, and it's automatic, then there's only a couple different ones that it could be. Usually theres a ring at the botton of the knob, where the stick goes in. That ring will unscrew. Once you pull that off, you should see three allen head set screws. Loosten them until your knob fits over the stick. Put it on the stick, and tighten the three set screws. If you put it too far down though, it will interfere with your button, and you won't be able to turn your key off. Once you figured out how to get the old shifter off, this should have been the easy part, and as far as what wil work, anything should. Unless there is some new kind of shift knob that I have not yet heard of, you should be able to make any one fit with maybe a little modification. I have an auto that I'm running with a manual knob, just instead of a button, you push the whole knob down. And yes, it might actually help if you could take a pic the knob you are trying to put on there, especially like the bottom part where it's supposed to mount

In his defense, maybe he was under the assumption that all cars are the same. Some cars the power cuts to the cigerette lighter once the ignition is turned off. Our J's are different though. My primary cig lighter stays powered all the time (car on or off), but the secondary outlet near the base of the passenger side center counsol has no power when the car is off. Perhaps he had a previous car that killed all the power to the interior once off and he assumed it was just like that?
Then people wonder why "newbs" turn into ricers and do what they want. Every question that the new guys ask, they get barraged and made fun of for everything. Gets ridiculous and I bet its why you don't really see anyone new around here all that much. Sheesh, we're modding J-Body's, and everyone acts like a car god around here
. Given, some of the questions are ridiculously obvious, but its still the point.
hey im not the guy that asked about the cigarette lighter you must have mistaken me for someone else , i do know how to install a shift knob is just that this apc knob that i got
surprisingly didnt come with a ring but is not the lack of a ring what doesnt make it fit , i dont knwo how to explain it umm the rubber wont fit im getting a new shiftknob anywayz

most automatic knobs have the trim ring mentioned above and usually have 3 set screws, at least every knob i've seen has been like that, including my Ichibahn

Hmmm I wonder why he is having trouble installing it on an automatic.

Well the one in the pic is the auto version. Unless he was sold the wrong one. You
can put manual knob on an auto too ya know. Just rig it so it is always engaged to shift or make it so you push the entire button down to shift.
the one in the pic looks like it should go right on, and the screws tighten down. those things around the bottom look like holes for the set screws.
I don't have a pic right now but picture this:
B&M aluminum T-handle with manual shifter boot on the auto shifter.
I removed the stock t-handle, cut a little off the end of the shifter tube so I could cut 1/2" coarse threads for the t-handle and drilled the center of the handle for the lock button (the yellow plastic shaft to unlock the shifter).
I tossed the PRNDL and installed the manual shift boot (the hole for the auto is a little smaller but a dremel works the best) and VOILA! Manual look with an auto shifter. A little rubber switch cover over the top of the plastic lock button and as was said in the post under tranmission/short auto shifter, I gain an extra .00005 seconds shifting from Park to Reverse!!!

That would require me to go out and do something!!!!
I may modify it when I switch her dash out.... My car is on hold this year, its time to get hers back to where she wants it....
