Is the large hole in the roof of my 03 Cav considered a sunroof or a moonroof? I have seen them called both in here and I really don't understand the difference...
The reason I'm asking is that I'm designing a lighted switch for the thing and I wanna know if it should have a sun icon or a moon.

What is the difference between a sunroof and a moonroof?
Sunroof is the generic term used to describe an operable panel in a vehicle roof which can let in light and/or air. Moonroof is a term created by Ford in the 70's, yet is now used generically to describe glass panel inbuilt electric sunroofs.

the way i have always seen/heard it was a sunroof just cracks open, and a moonroof slides all the way back so the window is fully opened.
ive always thought that
sunroof = it opens up allowing air and sun to get in
moonroof = just a piece of glass that doesnt open or might only crack
I've always understood it as sunroofs were built in (slides into the roof), and in moonroofs, the panel slides back and is visible above the roof of the car.

If a sunroof opens allowing air and sun to get in, and a moonroof is just glass that might not open at all, then what is the sheet metal that moves?

Yeah Steve, I would assume that you have:
SUNROOF, POWER, TILT-SLIDING, includes mirror map light Code: CF5
During the day it's a SUNroof, at night it's a MOONroof.

just do whatever looks better to you, the sun or the moon.
I don't know about you but it's pretty hard for me to look directly at the sun.
when i do i see the blue and green loops moving all around it. and then i see the aftermath at everything i look at for the next couple of minutes...howabout make the switch up and down and when pressed down with the (moon) symbol it will just crack open.... and press up with (sun) symbol it will go all the way back..but i don't have a sunroof so i have no clue as to what i'm talking about I'm just really bored at work while the rest of the club goes to two car clubs..and now i'm off topis so i'll shut up and rea he other forums.
put a sun symbol on it, its a sunroof
i thought sunroof's pop up and/or slide back, while moonroof's slide under the roof of the car.

What does it say on the window sticker that came with your car? I could have swore my '99 Z said power moon roof.
