Is this normal??
Thursday, September 08, 2005 2:48 PM
I was driving my car today and I happened to look up. So it turns out that the headliner and visors of my car are beige, but the rest of the interioir is grey. It's a 2000 Cavalier coupe with a sunroof. I just bought it this summer so I'm not sure if anything has been done to the interior but based on the rest of the car, I really doubt it. Anyone else noticed this in their cars?

Almost all J's have tan headliners no matter what colour the rest of the interior is. GM did it too make the interior look more roomy, but most people just think it's ugly.

So let me get this straight. You bought the car and you didn't notice its beige until now??
Everytime you buy a car you need to inspect it from top to bottom.
Anyways, yes mine was like that too. Just about all cavaliers are like that. But I do think they made some black headliners.

Well I did notice notice that there weren't any stains on it and that it was in good shape, but no the color difference kinda got past me. Thanks for clearing that up though. And now that you mention it a darker headliner would make it feel really cramped.

Some '95-'99 Cavaliers and Sunfires had graphite headliners. All '00+ had tan headliners . I was lucky enough to find a '95-'99 Cavalier in a junkyard with a graphite headliner. It really doesn't make the car seem more cramped, at least to me, although it does make a huge difference to have an interior that actually matches .

My 2001 came with a light gray headliner, not tan.

I might look around some junk yards. About how much would it cost to replace it if i did that? Maybe even redo the crappy carpet while I'm at it. The coupe has a lot of glass in it with the back glass comin over the rear seat and that combined with the sunroof gives it a nice open feeling. Having a matching interior would be nice although I'm probably the only one who would notice it. I guess making myself happy is really all that matters.

@ Sean McCoy: Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but I am almost 100% positive that '95+ Cavaliers and Sunfires only came with two headliner colors, graphite or tan, no light grey. It may look like light grey, but more than likely it's tan.

@ Evan Bare: I paid a little less than $30 for the headliner, headliner plugs, visors, sunroof trim and sunroof slider. I think that price is extremely good considering supposedly GM doesn't even make the graphite headliners anymore. I'm not sure how much it would cost to get carpet from a junk yard, but there's only one way to find out. The only problem I foresee with that is you may have a hard time finding decent carpet, unless you happen to stumble upon a newer J-Body ('03+). Trust me, having a matching interior is wonderful, even if you are the only one that notices it . You hit the nail on the head with that statement. It is all about what you want and what makes you happy, so knock yourself out and don't worry about what anyone else has to say about it .

my 99 base came with a tan. i have graphite now (with maplights). Brian (SpeedRacerZ) gave it to me for free after i bought a few parts off of him.

Like it was mentioned above. Car doesn't seem any smaller and yes it does makes a HUGE difference having an interior that fully matches.

Bummrz, I'm afraid I have no idea what you're talking about, but if you're anywhere close to winston-salem, nc i'd be more than happy to take your black one. But if you're from owen sound, i think that's in canada.

And does anyone know if the headliner out of a sunfire would work in a cavalier?

^ yep, one from a Sunfire will work in a Cavalier. I have a Sunfire GT and the headliner I got was out of a Cavalier. Obviously you just have to make sure the two have the same things in the same places, i.e. if yours has a sunroof, a dome light with or without buttons next to it, etc.

Yeah that's what i figured, just wanted to check. And by the way, I hadn't really planned on taking a junk-yard carpet. If i do anything with it, i'll buy a brand new one but since I don't have a whole lot of money, I'll probably just get the headliner. I can live with bad carpet if means I save a little more for a new set of struts and springs (i'm thinkin KYB AGX's + Eibach Pro-Kit.) Stupid stock suspension.

And has anyone ever tried redo-ing their headliner w/ "headliner adhesive" and whatever fabric they use?

Actually, I just did my headliner last week. It was tan on a tan interior and I'm trying to get everything black and blue.

I went to Walmart and bought 3 yards of fabric off the roll, it was 100% polyester and cheap, like $2.50 a yard or something like that. It was black and had a smooth side that was almost like suede. Anyway, I'm sure they have some fabric that will work, although I wouldn't get anything too fuzzy or it won't stick.

As for the glue I just picked up a spray can of multi-purpose adhesive, it had a blue cap and it was back by the masking tape. Don't get the 3M super-77 stuff because it says right on the can not for headliners. I just sprayed it heavy on both surfaces and let it dry a bit, then smoothed it on. I wouldn't take the tan stuff off, it leaves too much crap behind and the surface underneath is junk. I did the visors while I was at it, although that involved taking them apart etc. I hope that helps.

No, my car definately came with light gray(thought I now have black). It's a 95, the headliner is almost the exact same color as my door panels.

dome light doesn't matter. my old one just had a dome light. my new one has the dome light and map lights. just disconnect the battery for like a half an hour. plug the wire in for the light. connect the battery back up and the computer will reset so the maplights work.

There's definitely some light gray ones out there.

I believe all of them from 99 onwards are tan though. Sean, did you buy your car new or could someone have changed it before you got it? Are you sure it's not tan?

I recovered mine in charcoal to match the rest. Recovered my visors in red leather. Looks way better now!

I picked up a package of powdered black dye, mixed it with water in a plastic spray bottle, and used that to change the colour of my headliner. I just made sure not to saturate the material so it wouldn't sag when I put it back in the car. I'm really happy with how it turned out.

I'll probably end up recovering the headliner, visors, and the slider covering the sunroof in black.
I'm hoping eventually when I get the time I'll just redo the entire interior (paint anything i can, recover the fabric on the doors & rear deck, buy new carpet, new seats maybe, anything else i can think of...)
Sadly, I don't have the time or the space do all that right now, but come summer when I'm not in class all the time and have room to paint, that car is due for some changes. Nothing fancy (saving up for a better suspension).

Thanks for all the good info. I'm but a lowly newbie trying to figure all of this stuff out.

mine came with a graphite headliner and its a 97' but then again it has flames air-brushed up it now

my 97z came with a graphite headliner.

and i thought i saw a pic or two of a rare interior color, where most of the fabric was a light blue/gray color. is it possible thats the same color? i thought they were offered in 95 only though.
