Interior Progress (pics) (56K...hmmmaybe)

Thought I'd share my progress so far with the interior. Had too, just too excited about this!!! No it's not in the car yet as I have all the little things left to sand and paint still but I got the major pieces done last night (other than the console) and just had to throw up some pics!!

For those that want to know...I filled with primer/filler, sanded with 240/400, then primer again, sanded with 400 again and then wet sanded 800/1200 then shot 3 base coats, 2 clear. Total time on these 5 pieces, a little over 25 hours!

The colors match the exterior of the car, rims (gunmetal) and body color (indigo blue). I've got a new steering wheel (Momo), racing seats (A2s) covered to match the original interior and a bunch of other things (carbon fiber accents, LEDs, etc) but wanted to share what I have so far completed. All comments are welcome.

On with the pics!!!

did you sand out the designs first ? or did you just primer then sand ? help

Thanks for the comments!

I was told to not sand the design but instead to use filler/primer and sand it. So that is what I did.

The pics don't even show just how smooth and shiney it really is! I cant wait to get the rest done this weekend and get some paint on it and then all back together again.

so if i get a can of krylon primer and spray down my door first then sand it using 240 grit the design will not be noticed anymore?

I used a primer/filler from Silkens (German) and sprayed it with a gun. Then did all the sanding to take it down to the design (almost to the plastic) and then reshot it with the same primer/filler and then sanded it down again (knocking off the top coat/over spray rough stuff this time) and getting it smooth as possible.

I used an orbital sander as well, not just paper as I think that would have taken me triple the time (see post in this forum about sanding time!!) The small areas and stuff, yeah I used sand paper there but the large areas, orbital sander.

Nothing I would EVER do again that's for sure as it's been every Saturday and some Fridays for the last month or so working on this!! Well worth it in the end but I never dreamed it would be this much work! I know there are lots of folks who got great looking interiors using a spray can, but I wanted to do it like this as I've seen an interior done this way and it was PERFECT! Mines not perfect, but I got darn close for the first time ever doing something like this and I'm more than happy with the results of my labor!

looks crazy! now all you need to do is make sure you put the right color inserts in the doors and the right color seats. Because the wrong color can kill your hard work. I would suggest a simple black leather. I think that would look the best. Can't wait to see it all back together again!

I may have been one of the people to tell you that. Its exactly how I did mine and I must say man with the metallic that is in that, it looks absolutely amazing.

What did you use to clean the peices btw? If a proper cleaning agent (can't remember the name) wasn't used it'll crack eventually. Alcohol, soap and water won't do either,

Make sure to post installed pics because that is absolutely beautiful.

Thanks again everyone...makes all the time I've spent so far and the time I still have left to finish the remaining parts and then install well worth it!!

To answer a question from Zach Hilton...I gave everything a bath in automotive paint thinner first, and I mean a bath!! Soaked it!! Then I used a cleaner that pulls all the oils and such from plastic. Not sure what the brand was as I've been doing this out of a body shop near my house and the owner has been watching over me to make sure I was doing things right. I'll check and see what it was for sure. Almost like Ajax, or something like that. It was a powder and then you got it all wet and scrubbed for what seemed like days! The plastic was so dull and so ugly after I finished it!

Thanks again and should have it all back together sometime next weekend (hoping anyway!)

magik1109...I didn't do anything over the vynil on the door panels. I don't have vynil on mine so other than taking out the cloth (top part) and the map holders (bottom) it was all plastic. I did pull the window guide off put I can reinstall that pretty easy.

The dash though (vynil pad), I'm having fiberglassed as I have no clue how to do that and you really can't paint over the vynil (to have it last anyway!). I also took the vynil off the center console lid. Just filled and primered it though, no need to have it glassed.

Last thing, I taped the door panels and the back quater panels, didn't separate them as that would have split the one piece panel in to two pieces and that wouldn't be a good thing!

ok thanx.
so if your upper door panel was plastic that means i can just take the vynil off and paint it. how comes yours was already plastic? for the dash, i think i can unwrap the vynil of it like you did with the center console armrest!

Blue Splash...looks great!!! You made me realize I want to paint the top piece for the mirror (inside of the car) the opposite color! Thanks!
