It's really simple. Go on Ebay or go to a local junkyard and by the cluster from a 00+ z24. Then, simply take your dash apart (there are directions everywhere) un screw the old cluster, pop your new one in, and put everything back together. It took me about an hour to do and about $70 for the cluster on ebay. Note: No clusters before '00 will work as they are completely different.

Sin rock how much hp are you puting out with your current setup , and what are you running the 1/4 in ? I am going to do a simailer setup with my cavi , but am undecided to go with supercharger or turbo . All I have is a cold air intake , and a compession bent cat back exhaust with a magnalow muffler .

the kit is nice its a pretty smooth install
just make sure you get an intercooler that is what i just ordered from cavalierextreme.com the problem i have right now is it is getting heatsoaked

so the intercooler will really help along with the oil cooler i just ordered

i haven't had it in long but the first night i had it set up i ran a dodge hemi pick up
we ran neck and neck
so i went home and got the 1/4 time on it...... the time was 15.5

so with this intercooler, and oil cooler, and the b&m shift improver i am putting in i am hoping to drop that down to under 15. but reality say more likley low 15's the 15 flat

but i also have a monster of a system on board

two 12in rockford punch stage 2
kenwood 1000watt
two 1 farad capaictors
american legacy amp 600watt, on two 6x9 4 way pioneers
jenson 200watt on two 4x6 3 way pioneers
all the wiring
satalite radio and a flip down tv that isn't finished yet
and the isobaric chamber box that my subs are in

prolly talking about another 100 lb right there
not to mention i front and back sway bars and the floor bar
another 25-30lb

so that in it self is a tenth off what my real time might be

but if you really want to get into chat about the charger im me on my screen name (driveover55) on aim ttyl dude

I have a 1996 cavalier 5 speed with no tach and wanted to know if I could use a Z24 or GT cluster from any other year to fit in my car with no modifications? I called the dealerships and they told me it would not work but I think it will. Can someone please help me?

I just installed a 99 z24 instrument cluster in my 96 cavalier 5 speed and the car will not stay on. Can you tell me how to program the theft deterent system or how to get my car will start up?

I got past the theft system now the only thing that is working are the gas and temp gauges. What else can I do to make this stuff work?

When i did the cluster on my 96' cavy i had to let the key sit in the "run" position for 10 minutes then it worked fine. I havent had a problem sence.

Swapping instrament clusters 101

1. Remove your dash cover and the dash trim panel.

2. Remove the 2 bolts that secure the cluster, unplug the cluster, and remove

3. Before u install the "new" cluster it is a really good idea to swap odometers from the "old" cluster to the "new" one. This means that u have to disassemble both clusters. I recommend taking the old one apart 1st cuz its proboly gonna be junked anyway and doesnt matter if something gets messed up. This is only for the mechanincal odometers.

4.Ok after everything is swapped just install the "new" cluster.

5.One problem that i ran into was that the anti-theft wouldnt allow my car to start. This problem was fixed by letting my car sit with with the key on (run position) for 10 minutes

Thats the write-up i have on my cardomain page. I hope its helpful.

I changed my 96 base 5-speed cluster w/o tach with a 98 cavalier z24 automatic and the only thing that works is the temp and fuel gauge. The speedometer and tach do not work. The only time the tach does work is when I shift the gears real high. Any suggestions?

Bad cluster maybe? Im not sure. I got mine from a 95-99 cavy RS 5-speed(i didnt want the gear selector to be on it).

95-99 you need to get it from the same year. only 00+ are interchangable

I guess i had a bit of dumb luck, cuz i didnt know what the year that cavy was that i pulled it out of.(junkyard) lucky me

anyone have info on the sunfire to cavi cluster swap for a 2000 cavi.

I also DID the swap from cluter w/o tach To a Z24 cluster w/ tach. plugs right in. getting the dash off is actually more difficult then swapping the cluster is self lol

Sorry to bring an old thread back from the dead but I hate posting stuff that's already been posted once before...

From what I'm seeing you have to have the same year car for cluster swaps on pre 00 models. Does that mean just for Sunfire to Sunfire and Cav to Cav swaps or does this also apply to Cav to Sunfire and Sunfire to Cav as well? I would like to do a Cavalier cluster in my 97 5 speed sunfire to get rid of the red and just wanted to make sure it would plug up ok as I'm not having a whole lot of luck finding what I need to know regarding this.

Also, this might be a dumb question but I really don't know, does it keep the mileage on your car when you swap or carry over the mileage from the car you took the cluster from? Any help is much appreciated.

The 95-99 Cav/Fire gauge clusters are different sizes. Unless you're going to do some hacking to make it fit, you'll have to swap in the Cavalier's dash.

The only dumb question is the one not asked. The mileage on 95-99 is stored in the cluster and thus, the mileage will read whatever it read in the other car. In 00+ Js, it's stored in the.... BCM? PCM? I can't recall... but anyway, it's not stored in the cluster.

00+ is stored in the BCM. But im actually thinking all digital odometers for cavs/fires are stored in the BCM. To the best of my knowledge the only cluster you have to swap odometers in is the ones with mechanical odometers.

I'm trying to complete my interior upgrade beforei do my ecotec swap and i'm having trouble w/ locating some wiring diagrams. I did the dash, mounting bar, center counsel, ... swap and I'm trying to swap the instrument cluster but my haynes doesn't have the 00+ wiring diagram even though its supposed to be for all models to 04 (no ecotec, what a waste of $22). Mine is a 99 so the wiring is of coarse different. i have more wires in my connector than those in the 00+. If they just had a pin layout for the connector, being an electriction, I wouldn't have any issues but of coarse they don't. Any help would be great and save me $100 by not having to buy the interior wiring harness at a salvage yard.

People can't learn common sense. You're born with it. Either you have it or you just don't!

I have an 05 cavi and I switched mine from a tach to one without a tach from a 00 cavi and it was a simple plug n play. I had no problem at all with my swap. I chose the one without a tach, because my wife bought me a set of glow guages bu tthey were for one without a tach. But hey what the hell they look sweet anyways
