Ok so I have a 2000 cavalier 4 door 2.2 and it does not have a tach built in. I am soon going to put in a tach and vacuum gauge but I do not know where the signal wire is for the tach. Anyone know? I'm guessing it is coming off of the ignition controller but I don't know which wire it would be and there is no sure way to find out. Been looking through my service manual diagrams and can't find it either. Please help, thanks!
Just swap clusters. It is plug and play.

^this, otherwise you will need the msd tach adapter.
i don't think it is so simple... on the fuse panel, the spot for tach is empty and no wires going into it... that makes it seem fishy and also, I was wanting to have external, i'm going to make a custom dash top... I was going to make a fiberglass one different from the original.
also, it's a dumb question but will the mileage change if i switch the cluster? or is it saved via the computer
With a 2000 the mileage is stored in the BCM. I swapped my tachless cluster for one with a tach in my old 96. Super easy.
