Replaced Dash
Sunday, August 15, 2010 12:35 PM
I just replaced the dash in my girlfriends 2002 Cavalier. Of course the piece by the windshield was cracked. There were many more cracks I found as I took it apart. I found a great dash at a junkyard. It wasn't hard at all to replace the dash. It was mainly just time consuming.

After I got it finished, I noticed a line on the piece by the windshield. It is on the passenger side, just a few inches from the end. It is barely noticeable, but I'm afraid it might be the start of a crack. It hasn't actually split in two and I don't think it even goes through to the underside. Is there anything I can do to keep it from getting worse? I guess the best thing to do is remove the dash and reinforced the area on the underside of the crack. Any other options? I just would like someway of fixing it without removing the dash again.

I read somewhere that acetone will fuse certain plastics back together. Will it work on that piece? If so, I thought that I could take a syringe or something and use it to get some acetone into the crack. I could be completely wrong in my thinking though.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

replace the entire dash and door panels with a sunfire dash and door panels. They seem to not crack at all

I front strut bar helps reduce the dash vibrating. Before I installed one my dash would jiggle soo much sometimes a CD would skip. After the strut bar it stopped CD skip and is noticeably less prone to shake over rough roads.

Of course though I installed one AFTER my dash cracked.

you could try to find vinyl that matches your interior and cover it all

i would drill a small hole at the end of the crack. that stops it from continuing to crack more. after you do that take a cheap soldiering iron and a thin flat piece of plastic. work it onto the underside of the crack. basically reinforcing it. to fill in the top part, use some zip ties as material and plastic weld the top part. sand it down a bit and be done with it .

yeah there is another thread on this page about the coverlay. i would just do that. Lifetime warranty and you don't need to remove the dash to do it.
