custom 3-gauge pod in center console?!
Monday, June 22, 2009 12:11 AM
i've been wanting to do this for a while now.
1. have the design drawn out, but still don't have a clue on what to make it out of.
2. need to figure out how to make it sit flush in between the 2 consoles/not get in the way of removing the dash.

comments and ideas more than welcome!

mmm, im looking to do the same thing. I'd say make a cardboard template, than do all the steps to fiberglass it, sand, prime, paint, etc.
Another thing you could do would be to have the gauges slightly rotated to you so that they dont look to the back of the car

had a blown ecotec swapped 2000 cavy, now just an 02 Grand Am, and a 74 BMW 2002...

1. Do you want to follow the same contours as the bottom of the dash and the top of the utility tray?
2. I would suggest using a piece of thin lexan and heat up where you want to bend it , hold it til it cools and do the next curve. for the gauges I would angle them more towards your driver's seat use a piece of PVC pipe that matches your gauge diameter. after you get everything bent to fit, I would glass it all to strengthen it up. Sand, primer, paint, install and enjoy. It looks pretty simple to make just harder to explain on here. Good luck.

Thin aluminum would work too!!

lexan is expensive but if worth it than i wouldn't mind.
i dont think aluminum would be that great... problem is figuring out how to 'mold' this pod between the 2 consoles and make sure it doesnt fall out on the first pot hole.

If those are gauges that are important--wideband, boost, etc--I'd say they're kinda far away and not very functional.

Other than that, not a bad idea.

myself, i'd just fiberglass it into the top of the center console.

looks like a good place.
I'd suggest fiberglass the piece.

I know this thread is kind of old/dead but....

One way I saw was that they used mdf or some board, made the basic structure and then glassed it, etc. I would suggest building off the lower center console. This does give me another idea for my car, if I ever can afford to do anything.

I'd make it out of playdough and fiberglass.

Your car may do 13 sec @ 103 mph, but my car does 146db @ 35 hz.

Exactly.
That's why all my gauges are at or above the stock speedo/ tach level.
Looks cluttered to some but there in the line of site..

This is actually a great idea though and really looks good.
This area could be for your volts, narrowband O2 gauge, and clock.

You can't have enough gauges.

Pretty much my thought too. If and when I get around to something like this, I plan on having three gauges in the following order from left to right: Air Fuel, Clock, and Volts.

Most gauge manufacturers will include some type of hold down/clamp type of anchor, so securing them shouldn't be too much of an issue as long as the holes is only big enough for the body of the gauge.
