I'm sure everyones seen all those Pep boys commercials where if you buy 3 tires, you get the 4th free. Anybody have any experience with this? What kind of tires do Pep Boys sell, name brand or generic? They don't really list any tires on their website.
Usually it is GENERIC, and they charge you for everything - (tire change, weights, stems,. . . ) that is where they make their money

I work at Pep Boys as a technician.
First off to the one poster, most places charge for valve stems, balancing, and tire disposal. That stuff isnt free.
You dont go to the hospital and say, well I payed for the ambulance ride here why isnt that shot and this medication free for, do you?
Everyone rails on automotive places for charging for a diagnotic fee and @!#$, those scan tools cost thousands of dollars, the Snap On MODIS is $10,500, the Nissan scan tool, Consult II is $6500, the Snap On brick is $3200, Mac Mentor over $5000. So if they charge say $75 to scan the car, that have to do hundreds of scans to pay for the tool alone.
All those tools need yearly updates, which cost hundreds, Snap On cartridges are $300 a pice, and you need one for domestic, than Asian, than European, than ABS and ABS ones are specific to domestic, asian, european. That cost hundreds of dollars to buy.
So if you have a problemw tih how much shops charge, than fix your own damn car, install your own tires, buy your own $6500 tire charger, and $8000 balancer.
Secondly to the one poster we have Futura, Cooper, Goodyear, Cornell, BF Goodrich, those are the main brands.
If your looking for a good set of tires for your vehicle, we have a nice set of Fututra, with 55k or 60k warranty, for $331. Thats if you have the 16s.

No, he's just perfectly right. I work at Goodyear and see people bitch about stuff like this all the time. We just recently bought a new balancer that does everything besides wipe your ass... lol. $12k price tag, we charge $8 per tire for a regular balance, and $15 per tire for bigger wheels/sticky weight balance and or road force balance. Thing will take a while to pay for it-self.
I delivered a car to a lady the other day, she bought 4 tires, and had a power steering leak. We charged her NO LABOR at all, just charged her for the clamps and the cleaning of the lines. When I delivered her car, she got PISSED at me, told me the only stuff she had to pay for was the balance and the Environmental Fee's, she felt that she did not have to pay for her brand new tires, or anything.. she was lucky I was on the clock, I would have went off on her sorry ass. We no longer accept business from her.

That's why I don't even bother with brick & mortar shops. I buy my tires online for a fraction of the cost I would get at a store and mount and balance them myself with one of those fancy tire machines that I have access to because my father is a mechanic.
I bet if something like that happend to your father. (in which it does) he would agree with what everyone else has to say. he should be making your ass pay for tire mounting and balancing with a attitude like that.

You wouldn't be so lucky if your father wasn't a mechanic, you would have to pay to have those tires mounted on your car if you bought them off the internet and took them to a tire store.
The way it works when someone brings just tires in, we charge them for the dismounting of the old tire, the new stems, and the mounting of the new tire, and then the balancing. I don't care if you think all of that is BS, maybe you think you should only pay for the balance, but that's not how it is. Time is money, if we spend 30 minutes doing 4 tires on your car when you brought the tires in, we will charge you for that. @!#$ like that isn't free, and I know I would not do it if it wasn't free. I hate it when people bring their own tires in, it's like saying "Well, I don't think your tires are good enough but I still want you to mount these."

Are you jealous I mount and balance my own tires for free?
I have all that at my disposal, the modus, the brick, snap-on tools, ALLDATA, Coats Tire changer and balancer, Mid-tronics. Some of us are fortane that we have that kind of tools and equiment at our disposal with-out having to travel all over the place looking for best quotes and rates. Everyone has their own hook-ups just who do you nudge and poke at for what you need?

no it just means that they found the tires they were looking for either for a.) a lower cost than your shop offers the tires at or b.) a brand that you don't carry.
i have no problems paying for the labor to have tires mounted and balanced but i also have the right to find the best deal possible to make my money go farther. it's the american way.

sad thing is i can mount and balance my own tires for free to. who the hell would be jelouse. im just pointing out that why bitch about something you have to pay for when it costs someone more. its like when i sell parts and people dont think there discount is good enough. there lucky there getting a damn discount. its the principle of the action that counts. some people just need to grow up and learn that not everything in life is free.
When I worked at Autozone, Id give people the price, and they'd say "Okay, can you cut me a deal on those?"
Aint no @!#$in swap meat or pawn shop, man...its a national retail outlet...you want a deal, get an account or talk to the suits in Memphis...

rotflmmfao!!!!!11 u got me wit that one.
I usually buy my tires online and have them mounted at a salvage yard. I walk around the side of the building and go straight to the tire guys. I know they just pocket the money, but thats their deal.

You trust people at a salvage yard to mount your tires? LOL Do they balance them with a bubble balancer too? ROFL

the salvage yard has the same kind of tire changing machine and wheel balancer that every other tire place I've ever been to has. Its not rocket science to mount and balance a tire, even a salvage yard guy would have a hard time screwing up balancing a tire when the maching tells you where to put the wheel weights.....
lol...... the machines shops have now, a chimp could change tires and do a decent job
I used to mount/balance tires at a GM shop, but we didnt have the fancy new machines most places do now.

Just ask them the final price and shop around other places for the same tires and compare. No need for guys to act like auto shops are on their last penny here. They are making their money, that's why theres so many shops and most stay in business a long time. A few shops who scam people on "diagnostic tests" ruin the rep of good people. It's just the way it is.

Yeah, because a salvage yard has $12,000 to spend on a balancer. Sure it's all the same buddy.
The balancer where I work, $12K, two tire machines at $5k a piece probably.. I bet a salvage yard is willing to throw down that kind of money for tire changers. Sure, the machines we have aren't necessary for the regular 15 and 16 inch tires, but we also do 26" wheels unfortunately. And the balancer we have, I would love to see a junkyards balancer do what ours does.

I don't care what your equipment costs, my point was I'm not going to spend 70 bucks at one of your shops to pay for your balancer and equipment when I can get the same service done for like 20. They havent scratched any of my rims, and I don't get any vibrations. People are always looking for ways to save money, so why don't you go change some more tires.
