Wheel stripping
Monday, December 18, 2006 10:28 AM
I recently got a quote for powder coating my 16' Z wheels at $150-$200. Is that good? But the shop doesn't strip wheels and wants me to ship or drive the wheels almost a hundred miles to his stripper. I wouldn't mind but it takes atleast a day to do so I really don't want to make that drive twice back to back. Is there any home way to strip the wheels? Like chemicals or something?

Also what kind of metal are they, 2001 Z 16" wheels, and maybe any other info on this?

Oh and the stripper should cost about $50, wasn't clear if that was per rim but I don't think so b/c the powder coater said should be around $250 for everything.

Thanks. Let me know if anything is unclear.

100 miles is kind of far but thats a 2 hour drive each way. personally thats what i would do. i mean its his stripper and hes worked w/ him before so id give the wheels to him incase something happens then nothing is on you.

If you wana do it yourself get some ACE paint striper and go at it for about 3 - 4 hours. Second option is finding someone closer to soda or bead blast them. NO SAND though

Where do i get that stuff? I would really like to do this my self, to save the money but also i just like to do as much work as i can. Why paint stripper? They aren't painted now, just the factory clear coat.

Why no sand? What kind of metal are the rims, alloy or steel?

Thanks

Paint stripper to remove the clear coat (which is a paint based product)

Rims are an alloy...

i havent been able to find you an example of the product from searching online, but just go to a good autoparts store and ask for wheel paint remover. it should be with the touchup paint and the bondo and fiberglass, somehwere around those products. follow the instructions carefully.

personally, if this guy is going to do all 4 for $50, get him to do it. like bagged said, this is the best way because then they cant blame it on your prep work if something hapens to the rims.

I use ACE brand from ACE Hardware. Ive tryed about 4 different kinds and the ACE generic stuff works the best for me. Get some steel-wool or some scotch bright pads pour it on and scuff away. I would wash them really well with some brake parts cleaner and some soap and water afterwards. The coater will prep them for a final time before he coats them so i don't think there will be a problem. If there is its his fault for coating them that way not yours.

I am reviving this for a few final questions. I bought Aircraft Remover to strip the wheels and POR15 primer. Should I take the tires off the rims before l start doing this or is it ok to leave them together and just do a really good masking off job? The only part I am worried about is the stripper getting on the tires, from what I hear its pretty powerful stuff.

The other question is what grit and kind of sand paper should I use to sand the primer?

Thanks

I'm no expert, but when i hear the words 'aircraft remover' I dont want it ANYWHERE NEAR my tires... or my rims for that matter (If I HAD rims...good ol' factory stock, with new hubcaps lol)

test it on a spare tire, or a blown tire or such...

Or you can read the label...

I HAD some cleaner stuff for rims that says "wipe off overspray immidately" and "rubber will swell, but return to its origional size."

I dont think swelling rubber, is good for tires, IN ANY WAY.

yeah, thats what i'd do...

spare tire test (not car's spare, you CAN if you want...)
or... tape up the tire...
OR read the labels...

your choice.

(OR, you can use it on somone elses tire, and see what happens)

I don't have a spare tire to test it on. I was going to use a lot of painters tape and plastic. Of course I read the label and it just says not made to clean rubber components, or fiberglass or plastic. The place I bought it from said its pretty powerful stuff, but its what they recomended to do it right. I just want to make sure and do the prep right, cause thats the biggest determinant to the end result. I think I am going to try it on one rim and just take my time. Looks like I will be ridding around with one wheel painted, then two.... I will post pics when i am done.

you COULD, do the painters trape... lots,,,, AND, you can apply this ?foam? into a can, with a bruch, if you are that worried, i just thought of that.

like painting a house's corners...

cant get in with a roller (spray can)
so get in with a brush (toothbrush, small paint brush)

I am stripping them in order to get a good base on which to paint. Should be doing at least one rim this weekend. I will post pics of the process. I did a test run, on my old engine cover and decided i want to go with a spray primer. The brush on one I have is too risky with runs and unevenness.
