A new winter tire generally has a tread depth of about 11/32", which would be 8.7 mm.

Note that a tire with less than 1.6 mm would be considered worn out and garbage.

So if those tires have 5 mm of tread on them, then that's about 30% worn and Winter tires work much better when new than when worn down since many of the features that make them great for the snow will be gone before they reach the end of their usable tread.

I don't know how useful what I said was. It just gives some perspective on what he's getting for his money. It sounds like he'll get 2 more winters out of them so if they're dirt cheap, they're probably worth buying.

Keep in mind that the first 55% of the Blizzak WS-50 tread depth features the Tube Multicell Compound while the remaining 45% features a standard winter tire compound...

Oh ya I love that Rube Multicell Compound! hehe that soudns like gibberish to me, but I think it means that the first 55% of the tires are a lot better then the last 45%

And the price is damn cheap. About $50 a corner for tires mounted on steelies.
and when I'm changing them its slider time kev!
