Tranny Synchros

My 3rd gear synchro went and now it grinds whenever I don't double clutch. Even with double clutching it still will grind a little bit. I can not down shift at all even with double clutching without it grinding even worse! Is my only option to fix this is to get a used tranny from the junkyard or can the synchro be fixed? I'm assuming it can be fixed but is a PITA to pull the whole tranny apart, so it would just be easier to pull a used one from the junkyard? Also, how much would do the synchros cost from anywhere if I can pull the tranny and take it apart?? Since I can't downshift, I'm using a lot more brake because 4th gear doesn't hold you back too much and going from 4th to 2nd, I don't want to do because the RPM's are insane. Any help is appreciated!

Using more brake really?

The part is not cheap. Either get another tranny to swap, or take the parts out of.

Drivetrain.com will sell you the synchros, last time I ordered a set it was about $130 (granted that was for 1 piece Isuzu synchros).

However pulling a tranny out and taking it apart is no easy task, if you don't know what you're doing find someone who does.

It would be easier to pull a used one, but you'll end up in the same position in about a year or two after those synchros wear out.

Paying someone to install parts and bragging about it being fast, is like watching someone bang your wife and being proud to raise their kids.

WTF are you doing trying to slow your car with your trans anyway? No wonder your synchros are gone....

What are you talking about? Its called engine braking. They aren't gone because he does that...

You've never once down shifted?...

Correctly rev matched, downshifting should have little to no effect on your synchros.

Quoted for truth.

A rev-match that was done perfectly will not even put the slightest amount of wear on the transmission. I have done double clutch downshifts before where the shifter actually fell into the next gear down because there was no work being done by the synchros. Albeit, it only happened a couple times, but if you get it close there is VERY little wear on the trans.

Forgive me. Down shifts like that are bad juju in autos, not so much in sticks. Disregard my previous post. The one where I made an idiot of myself. Hence Sunfail

Well, everything was perfectly fine until my line to the master cylinder had a slice in it. I made it to work, but I basically had no clutch really. I could get it into 2nd gear on the way home, and I was about home when I pulled up to a stop sign. Went into 2nd fine, clutch it stuck to the floor, so I stuck my foot behind it to pull it back up. Tried to get it into 3rd and it would not go and just grinded like crazy. Had the car towed to a friends and he replaced the line and everything, but after I picked it up is when 3rd gear would grind. So I started to double clutch into 3rd and that works, but now its just a pain to do and would rather just try and replace it. I've never pulled my tranny off or apart for that matter but I'm sure I could find some locals on here that would help. Possibly Andy (Alias) he lives pretty close though I'm not sure if he is on here still. So from the previous post about getting a used one, is that true that those may go out eventually too? I guess it all depends on how aggressive that car was driven too. I want this fixed for winter because 3rd gear really holds me back in the snow going downhill and without it I don't know what to do.
