OK so i have 160k on my 2.2 and my shifter is sloppy when its in gear you can move the stick left to right and forward and back w/o pulling it outta the gear its in. So my question is is there a way to tighen up the shifter so that you can't really move it while its in gear
mine was the same way, an '02 getrag. .
I fixed it when i installed a short shifter, I had to get a new o-ring to sit on top of the ball under the clamp that holds the shifter in place. I dont know what the older style looks like, but my guess is that it is a worn bushing or o-ring of some kind under the console, not at the transmission.

install a short shifter kit and new shift cables. the shorty kit comes with machined bushings to replace the four rubber grommets that hold the shifter to the floor, make it real stable. the new cables will take up any slack that's left over.
