am i able to use an 4 speed auto trans out of a 01 cavalier and install it into a 99 cavalier that is a 4 speed auto. or will i run into shifting problems or mounting problems. both cars have the 2200.
It "should" fit.
All 4t40e inner parts are the same, but the bell housings are different. I have a LN2 4T40E from a 02 cavalier with 50,000 miles on it....if your looking for one. I honestly have no idea what shape it is in, besides it worked when pulled from the car.

i'm pulling everything out of the 01 for a motor swap and the 99 needs a trans. thats why i am asking. car-part listed 01 by there self. so i didn't know if they're programmed different. yeah physically they look identical.
4T40E mounts the same in all 3rd gen j's so your fine as long as you use the one for your your engine.
So your golden. a direct drop in.

Well kinda.
It mounts to the frame the same, but bell housings do not bolt to all engines.
LN2, LD9, and L61 DO NOT have the same bell housings and do not bolt to each other.
All LN2's should bolt to LN2 4T40E's
All LD9's should bolt to LD9 4T40E's
All L61's should bolt to L61 4T40E's
