well for some reason i cant get the car all the way into 1st gear from a stop or reverse. however if i use 2nd to get it to just creep foward i can then put it in 1st just fine, also down shifts from 2nd just fine. syncro-shift links-shift fork??? any ideas would help. im just gonna drive it till it goes and then bolt in the spare fwd tranny till i buy a new awd one
Are you able to double clutch and get it in? No help from me for cause, but it might make it easier to drive. Mine did that when I first bought it, but started working right for some reason(???)... now 1st is fine, and my 3rd gear synchro's out. I'm crossing my fingers hoping that fixes itself too

double clutch... from a dead stop...

At some point you are rolling before the stop, I suppose that would be the ideal time to do it, but it would always work at a dead stop for me... Lets say you're stopped in 3rd gear, you press the clutch in, shift to neutral, release the clutch, press the clutch in, and shift into first.

yeah ive tried double clutching from a stop it worked a couple times while making a little grinding sound. i think the syncro is just bad, oh well. it goes and ill just disconnect the drive shaft at the 3rd yoke and run the spare tranny for a while
Both of my SHO's had the same problem, synchros were the answer
Uhm..... is 1st gear even syncronised? I thought this was a normal thing for pretty much any manual trans car. I've owned a lot of 5spd vehicles, and have always had better luck getting them into 1st after going through 2nd. And you really don't need 1st unless you're stopped anyways. Guess at this point it's just second nature to put it in 2nd before going to 1st for me.

If I put mine into 3rd with the clutch held in then over to 1st it went in fine every time. Might have been a Ford tranny thing, the SHO guys said they all do it. Dont know about the Cav trannys
its in my turbo awd dsm. but most manual fwd oreintation trannys are basically the same basic idea inside.
Yes, all the gears are synchronized, at least on this particular transaxle. I don't have that much knowledge about transmission in general, but having done quite a bit of research on the Getrag F23, I can tell you with certainty that first gear
is synchronized. First and second gear both have "dual cone" synchronizers, while 3,4,5,R have single cone.
