racing with an isuzu 5 spd

hey guys i race stock cars on a 3/8 mile oval asphalt track. we run in 3rd gear and need to raise rpm's a little bit i was wondering if anyone knew they stock gear ratios for the trans and also are the gearsets and different final drives any good from mantapart?

mantapart = theives. honestly, if you just need a little more speed, why not run a slightly larger tire/lighter rim?

spec tire, we run american racer 215/60/13's rim is only 11 lbs 13x7 offset, this is mostly a pro four division they are full tube chassis just looking to get the rpms around 6000-6400 we are turning about 5600 in third at the end of the straight

problem being, stock rev limit is 6250.

we have custom intakes with carbs and distributors no electronics here , it is part of the division rules

do a search, I know I posted up a bunch of gear ratios for the Isuzu at one point. IDK if I have them saved on my pc or not (might be on my old laptop)

what engine is in the car?

we run the 2.2 ohv, rules say they have to be 8 valve engines, car has the 99 style pistons with less dish, custom ground cam and reworked head. which is about alll we are allowed to do

i have another motor i run sometimes which is customs shaved crank, ross racing flat top pistons, eagle rods, custom cam, 7mm valve stems, full ported head, titanium valve springs and retainers... but that one isnt quite legal at 12.5:1 compression haha

silly stock car racers, always trying to cheat. what wrong with just building a car that does well?

that thing cant be making much power, even with the mods you've done if you did indeed ditch the fuel injection and are now running carbs.

what about the 91 style isuzu trans, that is what i am running, 2nd gen stuff, ive read about the storm/impulse gear swap, can that be done on the older isuzu trans? does anyone know the gear ratios for the old 4 spd from the cavaliers?

we are putting about 200 horse down at the wheels as check by a dynojet chassis dyno last year

i am and always have been a fuel injection guy but this is a carb'd class and when tuned right they can put out just as much hp

Am I understanding you right? You have a 2.2 ohv w/ 2200 pistons? I thought that comp. ratio was @ like 14.1? Please give me a little more info on doing this. Thanks

the other motor we have has custom made flat tops, that has more compression than the 2200 pistons

200whp with a 2.2/2200??? i seriously doubt that.

why do you doubt it?

remember this is an all out race car, it idles at 2200rpm because of the cam, is very high compression, the head has had about 40-50 hours worth of work put into it, tolerances are very very tight, there is also no extra weight anywhere in the drivetrain, we have cut 5-6 lbs off of the crank, it spins up like a motorcycle

yeah... tell that to the many many 2.4 ld9 and 2.2 ecotec owners on here with built engines not putting down 200whp.

like i said i seriously doubt your making over 100whp more then stock n/a that engine.

definitely not knocking your work, i would be impressed to see 150whp from a 2.2/2200. i just dont see 200whp, thats all.

ill see if i can find the old dyno sheet, and scan it in. it was something like 208 ft lbs at 4300 and 202 hp at 5900 all of that in third gear obviously seems that is what we run on the track

So If you put the 2200 pistons in a 2.2 ohv block the compression won't be around 14.1? That's what I've been reading. I'm looking at "creatively" using the rules in my favor, you know "must remain stock". Like I said any info is very helpful, I'm just getting started w/ this car.
Re: racing with an isuzu 5 spd

in our division it states must be stock, but may replace pistons/rods with high perforamnce factory replacement, one of our guys is running an all stock division with the 2200 pistons in his 2.2. i dont see how it would be 14:1, the only diference is it has about a quarter of the dish, and liek i said our ustom made flat tops only bring it to about 12:1 depending on how much we shave the head

but on the other hand a 13:1 cavalier with a huge cam and race gas sound sawesome on the track hahah

I'm not surprized at that. There have been plenty of 2.2 engines built before that put down very impressive numbers. The block will take just about everything you can throw at it, so you can push it hard. The thing is it's not easy to do without forced induction and keep it street legal. But his set up is a different story. The thing I'm surprized about is that it made it at 5900 RPM. I would have expected it to be a lot higher, especially since he said it idles at 2200. That says to me high revving engine.

To the OP, I'm pretty sure you can swap the Isuzu parts from the Geo's and Isuzu's into yours. I'd be looking for the ring and pinion from the GSi. That should give you what you're looking for.

the cam was custom ground to a 4000-7000 max rpm racnge that is why the power is on the lower scale

does anyone know if i can just buy the final drive gear from gm for the geo and install it in my trans?

its possible you can get the Ring and Pinion from GM still....... IDK if the outer bearings on output/intermediate shaft in the Geo/Isuzu trans are any different from the ones found in the J-body Isuzu.
