hard to shift into reverse, how do i properly adjust shifter cables??
Friday, April 25, 2008 9:57 PM
just installed a Ralco RZ short shifter in my sunfire 04

i can't seem to get the cables adjusted just right... right now it's very hard to shift into reverse but besides that, all the other gears are easy to get into(except maybe 2nd but that gear has always been a bit picky even with the stock shifter)

should i now adjust the left or right cable? i've made about 5 adjustments so far and i can't seem to get it just right

help

thanks

As long as your shifter is centered and points straight up you should be fine. All it reaaly lets you adjust is the angle the shifter sits at. Check and make sure the lobe that is there for the reverse lockout is not interfering with you putting it in reverse.

i ended up adjusted the left cable so that it clips onto the fore-aft cable end a little 'less' and all is well... can shift into all gears with ease

I just wanted to put this info out there for fellow n00bs such as myself

Ralco RZ short shifter
part#0914836-1
installed on Sunfire 2004

the only things I had to modify for the install were as follows:
-had to grind the hole that holds the pivot pin in place so that it's a perfect circle
-there was a small metal cylindrical tube that could be tightened/diameter made smaller, it's purpose is to hold the 'reverse lockout lifter' in place, I had to grind it a bit so that it could be slid into the tiny hole in the shifter

other things to note:
-there is not c-clip included to hold the pivot pin in place, have to get your own i guess
-keep the stock pivot cup because the new one will not fit into the side to side actuating arm

that's pretty much it, it should be noted however that a smaller boot for the shifter would be nice since the fabric gets caught between the stick and the plastic base on the boot when shifting into 1st and 2nd

i like this shifter, shifts are quicker and i like how it feels vs stock shifter, and it was only US$84 shipped

Wouldn't have had a problem with a B&M.

Thats the problem with other company knock offs from the originals.

well that's certainly true

but i did end up saving about $70 and all it took was a bit more work and i put my dremel that is not so often used to great use...

all in all i'm very satisfied with the end result
