Anyone ever heard of shift cables goin bad??

My problem is this....

i can shift gears at the linkage but i cant shift gears with the shifter it self

BTW.. (97 cavalier z 24 isuzu tranny with custom storm gears)

Any Ideas??

Cables can stretch if that's what you mean.

i snapped them on my '91, I had no gears strange but true.

Out of curiosity, have you been working on your engine, and had the cables disconnected from the tranny for any reason?

yes i took out my old trans (bad synchros) put everything back together..Its like i can move the stick shift all over the place but nuthin happens

DOH! *smacks head* ...sometimes I miss things.

Did you remember to put the little bracket back on back side of the tranny and put the cable housings in it?
I would put money on that being the culprit.

Is the bracket loose or mis aligned?

Because on the Getrags if that bracket is just a little bit off or loose shifting is a problem. I tried to bend it a little and ended up having to troll some yards to get another one. I couldn't get Reverse until it was replaced.
