I have a 96 Z24 5spd. New clutch about 6000 miles ago and the other day i shifted into 3rd gear and it grinded pretty bad, i thought i maybe didnt have the clutch in far enough so next time i made sure the clutch was all the way engaged and it still did it. I have found if shifting from 2nd i double clutch it doesnt grind or if i just slow the shift down alot meaning pausin it neutral it doesnt grind. No other gears seem to have a problem. Any ideas?

this is the same as double clutching unless your holding the clutch in as you're pausing in neutral. Anyway yor syncronizer is going bad. J's do it all the time do a quick search on it. Usually needs a complete rebuild or replacement. Mine cost $1400 but I had 3 of em go, lucky me it was under warranty. Good Luck!

It might not be the syncronizer. Actually on a J more times it is a messed up shift fork. Also could be a problem in the clutch system as well.

I know on mine 1st, 2nd & 5th were bad. 1st & 2nd was syncro's 5th was the gear itself & the fork was messed all the hell up as well everyone else that seems to have this problem says its their syncro's. Hope it work out well thought.

Most people assume it is syncro's and just get another tranny and never find out. So they really do not know.

mine is doing the same thing. does yours grind on the 4-3 downshift or only the 2-3 upshift? mine is 2-3 only. it started doing this shortly after I got the car(106,000 km, about 65-70k miles) , then i did a drain and fill of the transmission fluid and it went away for about 20,000 kms (14-16k mi, i think), but now it's back. I did use synchromesh fluid, like you're supposed to. i just drained an filled it again to no effect. I beat this little car up, and it's the first manual transmission i've owned (i learned before I bought it), and I have little doubt that this has much to do with causing the prob; I've missed the 2-3 shift a number of times, but hardly do anymore, since I really got used to driving a 5-speed every day.
I put a B&M short throw shifter on. Now mine grinds going up to third and wont down shift into 4th sometimes.
