Ok here's the deal, Just changed my tranny filter ('99 z24 4spd auto) and flywheel. I put in a total of 7.5 quarts of dexronIII/mercom fluid. When I checked drain plug it runs out so I presume that would mean it has a sufficient amount of fluid. However, every gear seems to shift OK except overdrive. The final gear jumps in and out at around 2,500 and 3,000 RMPs. So when I'm on the highway at a steady speed, it continuously slips in and out of gear. Plus, when I floor it on the highway, the Tachometer REDLINES to 7,500 RPMS without changing gears. Only when I let off the gas does it engage. The car does fine up to 50 mph. Note the car shifted fine before... is it possible I still need more fluid?
Maybe not the best, but at least it's American.
I noly put 5 L when I changed mine. Put it on drive and test it. Could be the OD clutch that is going to hell.

yea the OD clutches aren't holding but since when you step on it it doesnt shift till you let off somethin sounds like to me the throttle valve or somethin isn't letting hydraulic pressure to overcome spring pressure on in the pistons that direct the hydraulic pressure through the valleys but anyway all in all take it to a tranny specialist cuz something is definately wrong internally
Did you check the level with car warm and engine running? Itīs a mistake to do it with the engine off if you do you will get a false reading. I did and the difference were almost 3Qt. which is almost 30% of fluid capacity on the tranny and that for sure affects itīs performance.
