Ive got a 95 2.2l tranny 3 speed (sucks, someone even referred to it as the slug, lol) and I wanted to know what my options were for getting something better. A manual would be ideal, but Ive seen everything from changing the gear ratios in automatics to adding after market tranny pressure enhancers! (shiftplus, i think). While all this information is good, its hard to determine just what is really effective if I don't (or anyone else interested) have the ground knowledge to make a decision off of. The other sections, such as suspension, wheel & tire, etc... have some great stickies that help people make an informed choice.
So how bout it? I KNOW there are some freakin knowledgeable people on this org!
Well... i will tell you what i have done with my 3spd trans for my 89 Z24 drag car. Even though this car is a track only car im building an identical trans to put in my daily driver, so the combination is VERY streetable.
I changed the 2.84 final drive to 3.33, and installed a phantom grip limited slip unit. performed a complete rebuild of the trans with new clutch packs, (Fibers and Steels.) Installed the 37/33 chain gears to bring the effective ration to 3.73. I installed the shift improver kit to firm up the shifts and topped it off with a 2500 stall converter. This combination for me has worked out great. I have won alot of races with the setup. Anything short of having custom chain gears made or having a custom differential build this is about the max you can do with the 3spd, however, it has made huge differences in my car. The only thing different i have in my race car is i had the valve body reworked to be fully manual, meaning the trans will not shift on its own, i have to manually shift it. but i wouldnt recommend that for daily driving. If you have any other questions shoot away. if you wanna see my car just check out my website... i actually have pics of us installing the new tranny. OH... the car has been 15.30's with a completely stock 150,000 mile 2.8 engine... the only mods on the car are transmission and suspension. the car has run 60 ft times as low as 2.02. feel free to check out the website....www.smgracing.com and if you cant find anyone to build one for you let me know. i wouldnt have a problem building you one like the ones i have build.
