I have a 98 Cavalier 5spd standard and The gromet / conneter on the end of the shift cable that connects to my transmission popped off and i can no longer shift gears!! the cable is absoultly fine.. its just the gromet thats fu$#@ and the dealer wants $281for the cable w/ connector..... is there any way to get a new gromet?? instead of the whole cable??
I don't know what your talking about, gromet?? You mean the whole end of the cable came off..did it break....if not is it something you think can be teaf'd off of another cable??
No, on the end of the shift cable theres a plastic peice that snaps on to the transmission.... its still attached to the cable but it keeps poppin off the tranny... i think the hole on the plastic piece is wore out.......
So then get some "Right Stuff" silicone, fill up the cap and snap it in place. With that silicone it will never come off unless you pry it. You can usually find it in the exhaust section of a auto store, it's also about a half size tube.

Will this work on a 3 spd. auto tranny? I had the same thing happen tonight. The end of the cable where it mounts on the trans. lever popped off. I was able to stick it back on well enough to get home, but I don't trust it.
How is "right stuff" silicone different than regular silicone? What about using a zip-tie?
Zip-Tie as in tie-wraps?? ..if it's not that then i dunno.
But either way..the right stuff silicone is almost like a glue/ but silicone at the same time. I've actually used it to repair a cv boot, bonds great and its extremly flexable.
new shifter cables cost me about $70-$80 from GM parts direct if you have to get the whole thing. Go to the dealer get the part number and order it from gmpartsdirect.com not sure if you can get that seperatley. Like my clutch master cylinder a the plastic piece to the pedal broke had to buy a whole new master cylinder.

Alright, the EXACT same thing happend to me, and I was extremely pissed when it happend. I took it to the dealership, and they said, I'm not sure exactly, but it was over 200$ for just the cable. So I was like #@$% that. First I tried the zip tieing, nope, definataly didnt work, it was extremely difficult, and after like 5-6 shifts, the zips came off. So I found the best way ever. Just drill a 1/4 inch hole in the top of the en don the shift cable, right in the middle. Then take off the little bulb thing that is on the linkage on the trans, where the shift cable hooks to. Drop a 1/4 inch bolt down through it, with washers on both sides, and double nut it. I works perfect. I couldnt even tell taht there was a bolt on it instead, felt just like stock. I have had it there for probably 6 thousand miles, works GREAT!
I also had the same problem with my 82 Cavy ( yes 82) with an Isuzu 5 speed that I transplanted into it. I took a propane torch to the plastic ends, slow heating them until I could squeeze them a bit with pliers to make them a little tighter. Works great for now, Fst Cavy's idea sounds good too, a little more permanent than mine, but when you don't have access to a heated garage you don't feel like getting to involved in a big job on the car unless you really have to!
