axle stuck in tranny?!
Saturday, October 29, 2005 10:56 AM
So my axle came apart and I went to replace it but I cant get the axle out of my tranny!! I have tried everything from pry bars to an air hammer and I evan tried hooking up to it with a rope and pulling it out with my bronco(I was getting pretty pissed.) Any way the axle is still there anyone have any suggestions on how to get it out??

I have a 98 Z24 with the Isuzu 5 speed tranny.

Ooh, by the way, I have had axles in and out well over a dozen times in the past year and have never had this problem before.

sounds like the axle isnt the only thing that broke, diff may be damaged.

No there is a "C" clip on the end of the axle that holds it in the proper place in the trans. Get a bar in there inbetween the trans and the axle and pry it apart. It will come really easy.
The diff is not damaged you would have heard a bad noise before you started to work on it.

I am having this same problem. I can't get the passanger side axle out. The driver one popped right out. Now i know what your thinking, the c clip is out of shape, and that's why, but not so. The axle is brand new from november of this year, only about 20 miles on the axle. So, there shouldn't be a reason it won't come out. I tried very hard and I'm a big guy too, i got some force behind me.

So, is there a special tool or is the pry bar the only thing? Or anyone have tips to get it out?

we just did a trans swap on my friends 2.2 5speed and the drivers side was stuck ,we tried everything. we had to take the tranny out with the stub shaft in, it sucked so much more than it had to, the axle was less than a month old and was a rebuild from cap.

Well, I just got done pulling the engine. I ended up destroying the axle. I got a slied hammer, but that didn't do anything. I left it in for the most part, and pulled the engine, and just angled it to the max, and that worked, but i had to take off one of the boots to do it, and it's still stuck in the tranny. Would an LSD affect this? I have the LSD insert could that be in to far towards to the passanger side? and preventing the ring from clearing something? I may take it to a tranny place to check it out, cause I don't want this to happen again. The driver side axle popped right out.

I had this happen on my 2.2 once, it was right after I blew my diff at low speeds, lol, luckily the after days of thinking, I finally looked into the tranny (hole from pin ) and I could see that the clip was half in the grooves and half on the splines.... so I popped it back in with a little screw driver and it was all good.

Can you rephrase that? so one axle was stuck once when the diff blew on you? and couldn't come out? so, you used screw driver through the other axle hole to get it out?

when the diff pin blew, it left a large hole in the bottom of the tranny, and gears all over the road. I went in through that hole and could see the clip that was off, not sure if you would be able to see it through the other CV hole... hmmmm, would be worth a shot.

Oh, k. Thanks for clarifying. I looked through that hole the other night, and the pin blocks the view to the other side for the most part... I'll take another look tonight.

I took the tranny to a transmission place, and asked why it would be stuck in there, and if they can find out why. The guy said, no, you don't want to mess with it. Just leave the stuck piece in, and re-assemble the axle when you install it again. Pack it with grease and put a band on to hold it together...

I couldn't believe it. I was like huh? are you serious. I mean, i guess i'll do that, since he didn't seem concerned at all. I dunno. Anyone have an opinion, or thought as to why it is stuck in there so hard? I'd rather fix the problem cause it's not like this is going to be the last time the engine/trans is going to be pulled. I mean, i hope it is, but that never seems to work out the way i'd like it to.

Are you putting even pressure on both sides? Many times it will not want to pop out if you just put pressure on one side of the CV housing. A quick jerking motion usually works better too.

The one ide came out like 1000 times easier then I am putting on this other side. I seriouly think that the guy that installed my lsd, and my differential, got something off. Maybe something is just a little towards one side, causing my passanger side to be stuck in.... theries?

its just a dumb thought but what if u whack the axle back towards the tranny in hopes that it reseats itselfe and try again from there. good luck

I think i tried that, but i'll try again. Any thoughts at all why installing an LSD may cause this? or any other internal work that would cause this symptom. Maybe the seal, since it is pressed flush with the tranny housing, it may be causing the axle to be stuck in there.

I took the tranny to a local transmission shop, and they got the piece out, and said nothing was damaged inside that caused it to be stuck. He just had to put EQUAL force on each side so that the force was directly along the axle's center. so, nothing was wrong... or so i'm told. I'll just have to find a better tool for removing the axles, if i ever have to do it again.

WOW dude...that is quite an extraordinary experience!!! I suppose the last and final thought is "Luck was on your side, and glad you didn't destroy anything in the process."

Yep.

I have seen sometimes when axels are installed wrong (the c clip was not installed with the grove facing down) and the axle was forced in. This in turn damages the c clip so that it cant slip out like it was designed to. Which inturn makes removal imposible. In your case you lucked out!
