2.4L 5 speed manual tranny reverse gear

Does anyone have a grinding noise when shifting to reverse? I have tried a little more rpm, seems to work sometimes, waiting a sec before putting in reverse but nothing so far is fool proof. I hate the noise, since it sounds like I can't drive stick. But I can, and can shift without clutch down and up shiftin' .So just wondering if it is a common problem. And also what kind of tranny is in 99 Z24? I am going to put in a short throw shifter eventually as well.

I had the same issue with my brand new tranny on my 98, and with the old one, problem is that the reverse gear doesn't have its own syncro, so if you shift into 5th before reverse, or double clutch it, it shouldn't grind.

yea, every isuzu tranny has that problem. It was actually designed to do that. It's a test for the clutch. If you let it idle with the clutch out then put the clutch in and hold it for 9 seconds before you put it in reverse, it won't grind. Or you could do what everyone else does, go to 4th then reverse.

I always just put it into any gear. It doesn't matter what gear you put it into, but it is always nice to do that so there is no grinding of anything...

How would the B&M affect it? The issue is in the tranny, not the shifter.

bump on this.

I can shift into any gear and then try to shift into reverse and it still grinds.
I can double clutch it and it will grind going into reverse.

why??? bad TOB or master cylinder..... or is it going to grind no matter what i do.

Well after 2 years the advice is still the same. No syncro in reverse, so the grinding is normal. Most of the time popping into 4/5th then reverse will make it smoother. Sometimes I need to bump it forward a tiny bit to get the gears to line up. What I really hate is it is impossible to rock the car out of the snow without sounding like you've never driven stick before. If you really have an issue with it then make sure you add "reverse must have syncro" on your list of features your next car needs.

lol..... has anyone tried to go from 5th back into reverse? there is a reverse lock out, which keeps you from doing that.

Grinding into reverse, mine only did it if I was rolling forward........ (the isuzu, the getrag doesnt have that)

Sorry you are right, you can't go from 5th straight to reverse. If you throw the stick to the left then right after comming out of 5th it disables the lockout (this is habit for me, I like to wiggle the stick when I'm in neutral).
