Transmission Fluid Check
Tuesday, April 19, 2005 6:34 AM
I have a 96 z24 and I wanna check the fluid levels. I found the red knob under the air intake tube. If I pull that out will it tell me how much is left and if i pull it up it will it do anything to the Transmission?

Nope. There's no dipstick for the tranny either.

If you want to check the fluid, here's what ya gotta do.

Run the car for 5 mins to warm the fluid. Then put it on jack stands.
Leave the car running and make sure you put it up level.
On the driver side of the transmission theres two hex bolts
You want the one farther up, towards the hood.
Pull the plug.
If fluid dribbles out, tranny is full.
If not, add fluid through either that hole or through the vent cap (red cap) on top of the tranny till fluid runs out of that check hole.
Put the plug back in, lower the car and that's it.

It's a big PITA.

Jonathan French, some newer J-bodies with autos do have trannie dipsticks, get your info right before you say something like that

tgfx, If you did find the red dipstick then you dont have to follow his instuctions, just the part about being warm and level, while engine running, pull stick out, wipe it off, stick it back in, and the pull out and read where level is on stick

all j-bodies with autos have a tranny dipstick--at least my 95 did.

...and Jonathan does have his info right---he was talking about the 5-speed trannies.

No I was talking about an automatic on a 2.4L DOHC. The only trannys on J's that I have seen with a dipstick have been on a 2.2L engine.

So take your attitude and shove up your ass.

:Edit, there may not be a lower drain plug. I honestly can't remember. The rest of the procedure is correct though.

You will need Dexron III- ATF

no i agree with "pushrods and nitrous", even my 94 2.0 auto has the trans dipstick, and im shure earlier models do too, i change oil for a living and part of that involves checking ALL the fluids...

Thanx for the help guys. I am going to get Valvoline MaxLife ATF and pull the red thingy out and pore it in. I hate going under the car. So pore it in till it tops off right.

thanx

as far as I know, the 3T40's (3-speeds) are the only transmissions in our cars that have an actual dipstick

check your owners manuel for the proper amount to put in it.

Oh and I didn't realize the he was talking about the fill cap instead of a dipstick.

I too also change oil for a job, and I have scene both 2.4s and 2.2s with dipsticks, not to sure on the years though

i have a 2.4L 1996 z24 cavalier, and i DO NOT have any kind of dipstick for my automatic tranny fluid. i am positive because i have ripped the engine down and rebuilt it, and there has never been anything other then the oil stick.

i read in my chiltons, and it explains the same process as jonathen explained.

I agree with the people that said there isn't a dipstick on the 4T40E.. I've never seen one on a 2.4L. Ever.

The check hole is above the passenger side axle... not the drivers side.
