Internal or external wastegates, which is better?
Thursday, September 01, 2005 5:44 PM
Hey guys, as I have been doing some more research on my turbo project, I have come across two types of turbo wastegates, internal and external. Which one is better? I would like for the wastegate that I get to be adjustable from inside the car. So what are the pros and cons to both? Thanks, Paul Moore

Trying to become the most modded out N/A 2nd gen sunbird 4 cylinder on the org with a..... screw that, I'm going turbo!!!

2.Slow OHC I4
Ported cylinder head, intake and exhaust
Relocated IAT with a custom WAI with a 6x9 K&N conical filter
All this, and I still can't go fast.............yet!!

Well, speaking from first hand experience, I would have to say that External is the best way to go.

Internal is not bad, but sometimes it is harder to control the boost and sometimes I would get boost spikes.

With external, I have found that it is a bit easier to control boost levels being that it is a bit more accurate.

As far as controlling boost levels from inside the car, you are going to need and electronic boost controller OR Trubo XS has a dual stage unit that can be changed from low to high boost with a press of a button, but the 2 stages of boost has to be changed under the hood first then you just use the button to change between the 2 set levels.

Either wastegate that you decide on will work with any boost controller and you can control boost levels from inside the vehicle with a electronic boost controller if that is what you want.

Internal is still not a bad option if you decide to go that way, but I am a fan of external ever since I went with a new manifold setup with a external wastegate.

I also use a Greddy Profec B Spec II Electronic boost controller on my setup and I would not use anything different. Very easy to use and can change from high to low boost with one button press and boost can be adjusted with just a turn of a knob.

Hope that helps some.

Later,
Jeff

We use to use internal for our kits and recently switched to external. I prefer the external MUCH better...
