need help with SAFC-2 and boost
Wednesday, July 13, 2005 2:35 PM
i have a 99 Z24 which is now turboed by a T3 super 60, FMIC, all hardware but i had the SAFC-2 installed today... im still not sure for fuel ill need an FMU and a 2 bar map. is anyone running SAFC-2 on the stock map sensor or is everyone running the 2 bar from the GM supercharger.
also if anyone has time i need to know which wire on the ECU i can use for a tach signal.

*i was also told that the 2 bar map in my car is made for boost so with out a reflash (which i cannot get for my 99) my ECU wouldnt know what to do with it. so i could use any help that i can get

this is from one of the posts that went around about a month ago on OrangeZ titled PCM install guide. if anone can help me on this with the same info but for a 99 Z that would be great...i also need the input and outputs for the pressure sensor.

=OrangeZ= wrote:ive had a few people email asking how i hooked up my SafcII so i thought i would put a guide together enjoy

first things first you will wanna go to here to get the pcm wiring diagram its about half way down the page
PCM Diagram
you will have to figuer out what harness each wire is on sense there is a blue harness and a black one, its pretty ease as the colors of the wires will give off what harness will need to be used for what, it took me 10 mins to figuer out what was what

when wiring you want to splice into the wires by cutting off only the plastic around the actual wires and then connecting them by wrapping the safc wire over the open area you just made make sure you use sodder or something to keep the wires together and also cover them up when you car done with some tape

here are the wires you will need to tap into

power = red wire went to c19 pink
Tach- =Green wire went to C33 Dark Blue
Knock = Gray wire went to C21 Dark Blue
o2 sensor = Blue wire goes to C22 purple

Map to pcm = Yellow wire went to C62 light green
Map for sensor = White wire went to C62 light green
this is the only wire you need to cut in half basicly, then connect the end thats going to the computer up to the yellow wire and the one thats hooked up to the map sensor will hook up to the white wire

Ground 1 = Brown wire goes to C64 closer to pcm
Ground 2 = Black wire goes to C64 1 inch or so away from Ground 1(brown wire)
dont cut this wire in half just splice into like all the others

as for the settings you wanna have your car set up like this

pressure sensor 5 in 5 out
4 cyc arrow up to the right
1 bar map
7000rpms
Cr +-30

my car is a 99 but i have a 2000 LD9 in there so should i run the 2 bar from the GM supercharger reflash or the SAFC-2 on the stock map sensor? or what?

If you have a 99 ECU, you can't use the 2 bar map sensor. The ECU still needs to know how to interpret the voltages regardless of the SAFC.

5SPDZ-

That same post you got that info from has a link to the NY j body library, which has a pin-out for your car. Just get the pin out and follow the installation directions. If you have that, you should be able to install it (I did).

Connector 2, Pin 10, there's no wire there, you need to add one.

thanx...also what sensor should i have it set at theres 4 choices idn them all i just know one is pressure then the ohter 3...i need to know that also the in and out for a 99 i see that Orange Z was pressure sensor 5 in and 5 out, 1 bar map, 7000rpm, +-30% do i need anything different then that for my set up? any help i need...this is a pain to figure out...

5 in / 5 out is correct
You use the pressure sensor setting
TPS is rising voltage
Knock correction is situational, just follow the directions to set it in the SAFC instructions
7000 RPM redline is fine

Other settings depend on your setup, such as the Hi and Lo throttle settings, correction factor, etc.

this might sound really stupid but are you guys extending the wires to reach closer to the pcm or are you guys just tapping in closer to the left side off the car.

I tried, it didn't work. What I ended up doing (because as you'll see, there are rubber plugs in the unused connector pins), is when I tried to push the rubber stopper out on the connector, I broke through it. I just pushed the wire into the rubber connector thing, and made sure it went in. The connection has been great so far, so I didn't even have to add a pin, I just pushed the wire through the rubber plug.

so you are supposed to lengthen the wires to the pcm??

Yes, the harness that comes with the SAFC is far too short for most applications.

Most of the connections don't matter, but if you have the instructions, it says it right in there for one set of the wires.

where are you talking you did this? you just found a random unused spot in the PCM that was covered by a rubber stopper and stuck it in? im alil confused

Well, its not random. Its the Tach pin on the 96-98 ECU's, but it isn't used in the 99+'s. Great thing is, that there is still a tach signal there, just no wire on the pin. So if you add a wire, you get a tach signal.

Ok, how are you getting fuel for boost? You do not need a 2 bar map sense you are not running the GM charger program. I would be running a FMU, and a AFPR and the SAFC to fine tune (on a dyno/ wideband ).

ok yea i have a AFPR and injectors so i guess ill get the FMU...thanx...but as far as what shifted said above im still alil confused over...i just wanan make sure my SAFC-2 is hooked up correctly...right now its in the VSS and i get RPM its just like 900 off so i need a spot where its perfect and how about to get it there...

FMU what brand is good to use? and where can i find it for a decent price not top dollar

How did you guys run your harness that its a foot short? I had extra length that I had to tap up and hide. Are there two different length cords maybe?
If you set the number of cylinders to 2 and hook the unit up the way it's supposed to be, your rpms will be correct.....a little bit of a lag ...but correct.
