Saab Ecotec Turbo help..
Monday, June 06, 2005 4:56 AM
I just picked up a brand new Saab ecotec turbo/manifold/wastegate actuator assembly for a really good price. Is anyone on here running this setup on their ecotec? Any kind of info or advice would be useful. Also, I was hoping to run the stock wastegate for about 8psi of boost initially, I need some help figuring out where a few of the vacuum lines go, and what the electrical connector is for on there.. Is it worth it, or should I go external wastegate, if so, what is recommended? I may eventually venture into the 15psi range when I am able to get my spare bottom end built, but for now I want to run it around 8psi intercooled on the stock bottom end..

I also have a set of the GM 2.4 LD9 S/C injectors 310cc, should be just fine for 8psi. What sort of fuel management do you guys recommend for a turbo'd 04 ecotec?

Some suggestions for fuel: AFPR (try Accel #74566), SAFC2/Emanage, FMU, intank pump/inline pump(whichever you would rather install).
There are many posts on AFPR's (Accel vs. Aeromotive), fuel management(SAFC vs. Emanage) and pumps(inline vs. intank). Hopefully they will give you some insight on what you need to achieve your goals. Make sure you post pictures......lots of them!!!!! Especially of your charge piping.....I took my bumper off and test fit my intercooler to try and order some pipe and it looks like finding a good route for the piping may quite the task. Good luck!

It's been done by a few people. The turbo is small so I dont know how well 15 psi will do. It might do it ok.

ok then so I'm not the only one trying to install a saab turbo setup....04firetec did u get the downpipe with it if not good luck on finding it. As far as boost goes if it's the g-17 which is off the 9-3 then max boost 12psi and max hp to wheels according to tuners from saabcentral.com is about 226whp. Let me know how it goes I'm hoping to be boosted by july. If you post pics I might be able to tell u where things go....

i reconmend not using the gmsc 310cc injectors with a ecotec unless you have a reflashed 2.4 LD9 engine..other then that i wouldnt use them with a ecotec........i tryed them with a FMU (no electronics) and will not surfice for some reason..use ford red tops if your gonna be boosting your ecotec....

that and the 310's are too small for 8psi, I am running on 370's on 8 psi and worry sometimes, I am shortly upgradingto 550cc

That 226whp at 12psi is probably on the lower compression 2.0L Saab engine. If running on the 2.2L 10:1 c/r at 8psi with adequate fueling/intercooling, it should put out close to that number. Should be a very streetable setup with minimal lag. Considering the price I paid for it, I can always get a larger turbo later on. I like the cast iron manifold with the seperate runners, that's a good design for both durability and performance, I wonder what other turbos will bolt up to it..

As for the downpipe, I don't have it, but I haven't looked for one yet either. I may be able to get one custom fabricated.

What are you going to be running as far as fuel mods/intercooling/boost levels, any internal mods?

Here are some pics of the turbo and attachments..

In this pic, the yellow circles are around each end of where a plastic vacuum fitting broke, I can fix this. The green circle is around where another plastic vacuum fitting broke, and I have no idea where it's supposed to go to. There is an electrical 2 contact connector at the top of that plastic "vacuum module", what is that for? The red circled pipe goes to brake booster maybe?

It'll be fun custom fabbing a downpipe from here.. A/R number circled..

Ok what is this thing, and where does this fitting connect to?

These banjo fittings for the coolant lines, any suggestions on the best way to connect to the heater hoses? Oil return line sticking out top..

Where should I tap in the oil feed line to the engine?

Any advice is welcome!

The blue marking is actually the internal BOV. The black thing is ur electronic boost controller-don't use it though unless ur using a saab ECU. The vacum fitting does not route to the brake booster but something else-not needed u can have it blocked off. I was going to drill into the pan for oil....but also open to suggestions. What's the A/R # for?? R u really going to fab the DP.......

"What are you going to be running as far as fuel mods/intercooling/boost levels, any internal mods?"

I'm going to be using a FMU, no injector upgrades yet. I am planning on using an intercooler as well not sure of the size yet and hopefully 10psi of boost. Bone stock internals for the time being......

Might have to fab the downpipe, no other choice. I'll try looking for the Saab one first though.. I'm wondering if I can bypass in the first pic the plastic unit on top of the wastegate actuator, and just run the line right to the actuator from the compressor housing..?

that looks like the TDo5-12B that the old vlovos used, same style exasut and internal wastgate and BOV, ( not electronic though. )

why dont you jsut flash you ECM for the GM ECOtec charger? fule and spark curves would be correct for timing.

Is the GM Ecotec charger actually available? If so, do I just go to my local GM dealer?

if you can get the code for it. ( look in that eco performance book. ) all you should have to do is plud it in at a dealership and reprogram it.

thats what speedracer did with his turboed LD-9
