Partially finished junkyard turbo setup (w/ pics)
Tuesday, May 10, 2005 4:34 PM
I posted my problems a few days ago in the performance forum, but we finally got it running. (Having a MAF sensor helps. I still can't start it normally, but it push starts easily enough.)

However, long story short, the new intake manifold and turbo were all installed in three days.

<a href="http://www.geocities.com/wayrin/Turbo.jpg">Click here if the picture doesn't work.</a>
That's the turbo ($110 rebuilt), off a Saab, I believe it was a 900. The exhaust manifold was bought off Ebay ($200).

<a href="http://www.geocities.com/wayrin/Engine.jpg">Click here if the picture doesn't work.</a>
The pipes from the turbo to the intake are temporary, till I can get the intercooler pipes done. The 90 degree mandrel bends are from JCWhitney, the straight piping I have is from a local exhaust shop ($150 for 10 bends, $30 for the straight pipes, about $30 for the couplings... so about $200 total for it all). The downpipe is also from the Saab, for about $10 I think. We did a little chopping to get it to fit.

The intercooler ($200, from Johnny Racecar) is obviously just for show at the moment. I'm still trying to figure out if I like how the chopped up front bumper looks.

<a href="http://www.geocities.com/wayrin/IM.jpg">Click here if the picture doesn't work.</a>
The manifold I got off eBay after a few weeks of searching the local junkyards to no avail. I'm particuarly fond of the throttle cables (which are mounted using the stock 2.4 bracket through a hole where the battery used to be.)

<img src="http://www.geocities.com/wayrin/Boost.jpg">
<a href="http://www.geocities.com/wayrin/Boost.jpg">Click here if the picture doesn't work.</a>
And, my $2.50 boost gauge off a LeBaron. I'm very fond of it. =P

So, total cost for the turbo project comes out to:
$110 Turbo
$200 Exhaust Manifold
$220 Piping
$200 Intercooler
$60 Oil lines (spent way too much =( )
$300 Megasquirt
$60 Injectors (No luck at junkyards again)
= about $1150, unless I'm forgetting something. If you include the intake manifold, I'm up to about $1250. I'm still assembling the megasquirt, and hope to have it ready relatively soon. Once that's all ready, I'm hoping to push about 8 PSI... maybe 10-12 if I'm feeling lucky.

I love the front mount intercooler.....hmm, what size was thta one? and that isn't photoshoped right? it is an actual picture. hmm, let me look closer.... hmm, can't tell. I might do that same thing. It looks like the car is smiling. or i may just decide on a front bumper aftermarket , but i only really like the stock one look.... I must be weird.

^^ i agree..the intercooler thorugh the stock bumper looks pretty freakin nice and i'd also like to know what size that one is....almost looks like the 8" one from JRC.

lol, I'm glad you like it guys. I'm also glad you think my intercooler is larger than it is, 'cause it's only the 6". =) As for gaskets and vacs, I did buy new gaskets from Bennett Auto, so that'll jump it up another $20 or so. The new vacuum/coolant lines are all just random hoses from Lowes', and they were kinda expensive too... at least for the larger ones, like the new brake booster and main coolant lines. And, on that note, I don't recommend using random hoses for a break booster line... mine keeps kinking =(.

nice setup. i think your junkyard project is one of the first i've seen in a while that didn't involve a DSM side mount intercooler.

I was a retard, and now I'm permanently banned.

Yeah, for whatever reason, I decided not to cheap out on the intercooler. Probably just me trying to be flashy =) I do need one of those DSM blow-off valves, though. The Saab one I have sounds kinda cool, but it's almost impossible to hear unless you're really listening for it. Damn my loud exhaust.

We don't have MAF sensors and the biggest complaint w 95% of OEM boost gauges is that they are HIGHLY in accurate. I don't think a boost gauge is something you want to cheap out on. I'll prob have a Autometer phantom mechanical boost gauge for sale soon.

Re: Partially finished junkyard turbo setup (w/ pi

=P The boost gauge is temporary. When we were almost done collecting parts I was almost entirely out of money, and we realized I didn't have one at all. We wanted to at least make sure I wasn't boosting 15 PSI on stock injectors, so we picked it up. Unfortunately, "temporary" might be a lil' while, till I can afford a better one.

lol, sure thing man. I'll take more pictures in the morning. I must warn you though, it's not perfect. The bumper was cut out by hand, so it's a lil' wavy. That, and there's some fiberglass work that needs to be done. But I'd be happy to ablige.
