How long to install GM S/C kit?
Tuesday, April 12, 2005 3:25 PM
Just wondering how long it took you guys to install the GM supercharger kit from beginning to end.

I'm wondering if it's reasonable to expect that we'll have it done in 4 and a half hours or if it generally takes much more or less time.

And if it took anyone much longer... what was the delay? Lost bolt? Needed a tool you didn't have?

With all the dicking around that my friends and I did, it took us about 5 hours........Took time for me to realize that the studs on the head had to come off......then for some reason it was a pain in the butt to put one of the bolts that hold the fuel rail to the engine back in.....other than that it was an easy job.....o and an early "Welcome to the Club"

A day with all the patience in the world and lunch/beer breaks. I suggest a ratcheting wrench when installing the belt because it will be a bitch as I did not have it.

I did the first one in 4-5hrs with a helper. But I also did that at 3am the morning before the 02 Bash.

I've done 4 others with variously talented helpers and it takes 4hrs typically.

would have had it done in less then 3hrs but some how i managed to strip one of the holes on the head because GM decided to make this really funky screw .... so watch out for that

other wise took me 5 hrs grr cuase i had to drill out the hole on the s/c and the head and then tap it all again ugg what a nightmare... that @!#$s never coming off there lol

if you have everything you need and you've done all of the steps in the manual before, like injectors, plugs, etc, 4 hours is doable. though you'd probably be rushing. having a set of taps available would be a real good idea

A set of taps? I don't even know how to use taps.

What am I likely to strip? Are there some extra bolts I should have on hand just in case?

took me 2-3 days. but i was by myself and taking my sweet as$ time. I worked on it here and there when i felt like it with in them days.

i had the same problems others had. not reading the directions. i too left the stock two bottom intake manifold studs and couldnt figure out why the s/c wasnt sitting striaght. . just remove all the studs going to the head and u will be fine. I think i had one stud stripped out almost, but i got luck.

also the metal hard line thing that goes to the brake booster is sorta a pain in the as$, but just work some magic and it will be fanagle it in place.

zip tie the coolant hose near the s/c belt to the other hoses near by. Just make sure it is outta the way of the belt as u dont want it to rub threw a coolant hose.

Not sure if u have a aftermarket pulley on there, but u need your stock one( u probably knew that), and make sure it is on there tight. Some odd reason mine came loose ,must have not tightened it the best. All good now.

umm. install the IAT sensor before u put the s/c onto the car.

hmm
you will be fine, just take your time and read the directions. Welcome to the club.

good luck and keep us updated

intake manifold studs are a 5.5mm socket

make sure the wires for the tps and map sensor reach the new tb location, likely you'll have to strip back some of the loom

the lower bracket needs two bolts on the block, likely these will be rusted to hell. thats why you would need a tap.

Took me 5 hours @!#$ off with friends.

Any hole that you have to thread into to put a bolt into the block I suggest spraying WD40 in and blasting them with compressed air.

about 9-10 hours for me... but i cleaned out my entire engine bay when every thing was off... and if makes a difference i am only 17 years old....

And i agree with Joe Schulte, clean out all the holes before you bolt the supercharger on... i got it all on and the very last bolt would not go in properly at all... turns out the threads were messed up... so out came the tap and die set... and the can of WD40

Are these bolts that are currently in the block and rusted, or are they currently unused threaded holes that are exposed and corroded?

Thanks for all the advice guys! I'm sure it's gonna make the whole thing go even smoother.

I'm hoping Borgs is right though. The engine is well maintained and the car is garage parked so I hope there's very little corrosion issues to deal with.

I'm not even really sure if they're fully threaded, but having the tap would be invaluable. What I could possibly do is the next time I'm working on an LD9, I'll try to find a tap in the right size to borrow from someone at work and bring that along.

You're looking anywhere from 4-6 hours, depends on how much you drink, how much you're distracted, etc.

Jasonoshawaz24 wrote:intake manifold studs are a 5.5mm socket

To remove those studs, you can use the 5.5mm socket, or the tried and true method of using 2 nuts to remove a stud.

What was everyone's trick to tightening the two bolts that go into the head, at the bottom? There's just NO room to move there with a socket, and takes forever with a wrench.

I also mangled that one fuel rail bolt on mine, glad I'm not the only one!!

Yeah dont remind me, lol. Deff pull the studs and just makesure that all the vacuum lines are secure before you mount the charger and the PCV line is out of the way. That was the biggest headache because I had to take the charger back off to fix it.

Ok... a number of you are mentioning this 5.5 mm socket. I'm pretty sure my socket set doesn't have any such thing, seeing as I've never even heard of half-mm sized sockets existing.

Is this actually just an SAE socket of some sort or something? Should I go out and buy one? If so, where do I get one? Is it a specialty tool of some sort or will I just find it on the shelf with all the other sockets?

My sears socket set (craftsman) had one.

But enough with the questions Kev, just go install the damn thing
