im gonna be building a 2.2l soon from the ground up and want to run forced induction on it. i havent decided on supercharged or turbo yet. If i run a turbo ill probably use a factory turbo from a 2nd gen 2.0l turbo sunbird because i can get my hands on one. i havent seen a supercharger for the 2.2l yet and i was wondering if the supercharger from a cobalt wood work.
if your going for a full ground up build then go turbo. theres a lot more potential with the turbo especially on a built engine.
superchargers are great for low rpm power but they are limited and use ~20% of the engine power to turn. pound per pound a turbo will make more power. depending on turbo size lag can be an issue.
there both great so just pick the one you prefer.
Oh youre the guy from the newby page I had posted on. Disregard most of what I said there. I thought you said you wanted to boost a 2.2 from a 98-02 not eco. Thats a huge detail left out lol. You could definitely hit your desired hp range with a supercharger, but yeah more potential with a turbo setup. So no 3800 swap now?
2004 Cavalier Sedan
Turbo will make more power no doubt about it but....your going to need a person who can tune an eco ecm and alpha n because we don't have speed density. The super chareger will be easier to tune and could be had for less. My 100% stock eco put down the numbers in my sig......now I'm going turbo so buy my stuff.
i wouldn't waste your time on a sunbird 2.0 turbo if its an ecotec theres alot more out the for the eco if your gonna do it on the cheap side it would still be sheaper to do the saab 9-3 swap

Boost all the time or lag?

Oh please, that argument is so void now-a-days it's not even funny. Turbo spool has been decreased significantly to the point that you can be fully spooled at 11psi by 1350RPM. Even a small turbo can still out perform the M45.
To the OP - Save some money and just build for turbo, instead of being like the vast majority of people who spend more then they need to, by starting supercharged, then switching to turbo later on because of the limitations of the supercharger.
bottom line.. what are your goals and what do you plan on doing with the car?
if you're just going for big numbers or drag racing, go turbo.
if you're looking for an easy setup to install with decent gains, the m62 works well.
personally, i love my s/c for autox.
Thrice,
Chances are he will not pick a turbo that will get to 11psi by 1350 rpm, especially since he mentioned a sunbird turbo.... lol
Alright im new here and this isnt my firsf cavalier build but its gonna be my first boosted build i got a 1996 z24 2.4l twin cam and would like the most boost for the least pocket killing price tc or sc?
James come on.... this question has been asked a million times. Check out tuning for your year, that is probley where you will quit.
To the OP what year 2.2 do you have...that will help answer your question easier. Superchargers are easier and make stable power, turbochargers have more potential but require more to install and can have more problems. If you do not have an eco turbo is the only way you can go.

First off as said above you will need to make the car tunable...cant just slap a turbo or supercharger on and go. Engine will go BOOM! You will need a 97 computer and engine harness. Not a hard swap, just time consuming. Everything is plug and play except you will need a 97 oil sensor. I just did this swap recently in my 96.
Once you do this you will need to buy HPtuners Pro and a Wideband so that you can actually tune for the boost.
Now as for the turbo or supercharger and cheapness shop around. I have seen used superchargers go for over a thousand as well as low as 500. Turbo setups are the same way, but more complicated because all turbos are not created equal and one person's setup might be rigged while another is well put together. I was lucky enough to find a good tubo setup capable of 12s for $750 to my door.

It depends on what you want for your car. If you want something that won't kill you engine in the long run go supercharger. Turbos are great for a car you don't drive every day. Great for drag racing. Circuit racing or Autox go supercharger. Either way you still get good to great HP gains it just goes to preference.
