Fuel Mixture prob. and Backfire at Full throttle.
Saturday, April 16, 2011 4:03 PM
Hey guys, I got a 2002 eco with a hahn stage 2 kit. lately according to my innovate air fuel guage, I have been ideling around the 17.2-18.5 mixture range. which is quite high compared to my usual 14.7-15.6 range. Secondly lately I have been getting alot of like backifre popping sounds coming out of my exhaust with black smoke when I am really pushing her hard at full throttle. I have taken apart my thottle body and cleaned it out as well as cleaned the sensor off. Gave me a slight smoother idleing but other then that the issues are still there.

Check your plugs and gap

What is the wideband saying when you are getting on it?

What are you doing for tuning?

Well a guy tuned it for me around 3 years ago with hp tuners. now he doesnt have hp tuners nor does anyone around here. the car ran flawless the last 2 1/2 years. it just started acting like this

CHECK YOUR PLUGS AND GAP! Start small, just try it. I had the same exact problem, my plugs were gapped too much and seemed like it was fouling out.

I would go with the plugs, probably worn down and too much gap and blowing spark out.

what should the gap be for turbo cars? 0.32?? what plugs are good with the hahn kit? SRT-4 plugs? or facotry plugs?

i run NGK LTR7IX-11, they are 2 steps colder than stock. I think im gapped at .30 or .32, cant remember off hand. but not sure how much boost you are running either to justify how cold of spark plugs you need.

What plugs have been in the car for the last 2 years? I would probably run them at the same gap as they were.

so what do colder plugs do and is this what I should get for my 8-11 psi hahn stage 2 car?

I would run the same plugs youi were tuned on, and same gap.

well me being an ass like i am, i cant remember what plugs i was using nor the gap, however, i went out and got some ngk r5a or something like that, gapped em at .31 and went out for a drive and it ran smoother and no more backfiring at full throttle, which is nice. However, my idle is still sitting up at the 17.x range which sucks because i do not want to me runnin this engine lean. is it possible the bosch wideband sensor needs replacing? any way to clean it? is something screwed up with my FMU? Also, i dont know if this is common, but if i push on it hard then let off the gas to slow down I get back firing popping sounds. (not always)

innoviate widebands do have to be calibrated. Read your manual. Also lean at idle will not hurt the motor.

That's fuel burning in the exhaust, that's somewhat normal in a fuel injected car. Mine did that after I put my exhaust on. If it sounds like it's from the intake, then I have no idea.

from the intake? hmm definitely sounds like its from the back of the car... as for the calibration of the innovate sensor, i do it like once a week. Maybe I will unplug it completely and see if that makes any difference.. When i pulled my old spark plugs out they were definitely not golden brown in colour they looked more whiteish which means the car runs lean

do u have any vacuum leaks? check all your hoses.

ok, well i started the car this mornign and it sounded like @!#$. ALOT of front engine noise. so i was like wtf... i open the hood and all the nuts shook off the exhaust where it connects to the turbo... ugh. so i spent the day finding nuts to bolt it back up with some good locktite. hopefully this will fix all my problems. prolly also the reason the sensor was reading all stupid at idle is a bunch of exhaust was leaking into the engine bay...

I have yet to see a set of plugs from a boosted car look brownish. Either black or whiteish.

Are you taking the sensor out of the exhaust when you calibrate it? Also you don't have to do it once a week.

no i dont take the sensor out of the exhaust to calibrate it, that would be a huge pain in the butt. I calibrate it alot because we have alot of temperature changes here. sometimes as much as 20 degree diff. in one day. I let the car sit over night so the exhaust pipes fill with oxygen then calibrate it before i drive.

NO, it needs to be in open air. Period the end.

Correct.

Also temp changes has nothign to do with calibration of the sensor.
