1.Just woundering if it was ok to tap into the top of the oil pan . Reason to ask this stupid ? is that the ecotec oil pan is pretty small and it holds 5 L of oil. Will it be above the oil level ?I don't really want to tap the girdle. Where the shop taped it the oil is backing up into the turbo.
2. Is 5/8 a good size for the return or should i go bigger??
Is it a better idiea to tap the block where the stock saab oil return would be?? if so please let me know what is working for you. thanks guys
i tapped my pan. worked fine. and i have a -10 return line for mine. its huge
where abouts is your tap located? above the drain plug?
yes above the drain plug

lol What i went was is it taped DIRECTLY above the drain plug or is it off set?
This is where I tapped mine:
And the pan is FULL when you fill the car with oil (4.4quarts)
On my car, I have an extremely slow leak right now with my fitting on the pan when the car is off. I'll be taking it out next oil change to re-seal it. If you are really worried about that possibly happening to you, tap the girdle, but either will work.

Thanks guys. see my problem was that oil was backing up into the turbo. the shop that did it said it would work so before i looked at it i started it and took her for a boot. Man what a mess. oil every where.
Who did the work for you? I see you are also in Ontario. I hope it wasn't Boost(If they are still around)
Nope. Some idiot at a shop called Johnny's Affordable Auto in St.Catharines. He hooked up my return line through the drain plug. Ya he's a dumb***. i'm doing the work tomorrow
remember that when the car is running the oil level goes down, to send oil to the head

this is the way most people go, then u dont have to worry one bit about oil backing up in the return line. and say u need to unhook the return line, if its tapped into the pan, oil will leak out everywhere if u just disconnect it. been there, done that....
and tapping the girdle and putting a fitting there doesnt stick out at all, like u see vince's does. and i would try to avoid 90 degree bends in oil lines, 45 degree bends keep the oil flowing smoothly, while 90s tend to back up.. not saying it happens to everyone, but its good to avoid if possible
why go through all that effort tapping the pan for a return line??
tapping the girdle is easy and is gauranteed not to have an issue backing up.

this is the way that i looked at it when i drilled my block. either way you have to drop the pan, so you shoud do it the right way(at least in my eyes). the block is actually really soft, i drilled mine with a cordless drill.
yeah, its not like you have to drill through an ld9 and tap the hole... aluminum is your friend

Exactly. There is no reason for anyone to tap the pan for this very reason here. The pan has to come off no matter what. If you're doing a fresh turbo install, the exhaust manifold isn't in your way, there's nothing back there. Just takes a little bit of kneeling on the engine or leaning over it...whichever you prefer, and a little patientce with a tap.

They are both acceptable locations to tap, both has advantages and disadvantages. There's no "best" solution, but there are appropriate ones.
Chris, you can search for pictures in this forum. Search for ecotec girdle, or ecotec oil return and some pictures will eventually come up.

I still dont see any advantage to tapping the pan rather than the girdle.
