GMPP supercharger for '02 Z24 questions...
Saturday, March 31, 2007 11:55 PM
First some background. I want to buy a Subaru WRX but unfortunately I probably won't be able to do that for another 2-3 years. So in the meantime I want to do something to pep up my '02 Z24. The Z24 is a good car and I do like it, but let's be honest, it is DOG slow....and I'm tired of it. I was tired of it a year ago. So lately I've really been looking for something to do to my Z24 to get the horsepower up and make it a more potent car. That's how I came across the GM Performance Parts supercharger. It's about $1,400 through gmpartsdirect.com and I am seriously considering purchasing it, but I have some questions I hope some of y'all might be able to answer!

1) I test drove a Cobalt SS Supercharged and I liked the power and the way that car drove. According to the specs, adding this supercharger to my Z24 will basically give me the same performance specs as the Cobalt. But that's just the specs, what's the reality? Will adding this supercharger to my Z24 give me about the same feel as the Cobalt SS Supercharged? Is the acceleration and power going to be comparable? Or is adding this supercharger really not going to be that noticeable? Basically, am I really going to notice the difference?

2) The supercharger kit from gmpartsdirect.com costs $1,400....but what is labor going to cost me from a dealership? I do not have the know-how to install this myself and unfortunately I don't know anybody that does. So I would have to get this installed by a dealership. Anybody have any idea what that's going to cost me? And asking the dealership is almost pointless. They'll quote one price but during the installation they'll come to me and say "oh, well we gotta do this now so that'll cost X amount of dollars" and then they'll come back an hour later and say the same thing and come back an hour after that and say it again. Bottom line, anything they quote me is not going to be what they charge me. So could anyone that has had this supercharger installed through a dealership give me the labor costs?

3) Insurance. If I did have the supercharger installed, do I have to report this to my insurance company and are there any repurcussions from reporting or not reporting the mod?

Thanks in advance for any advice and expertise y'all can offer!

IIRC - the 2002 Z24 came with the Ecotec,

The Ecotec makes about 140hp 150 ft-lbs. The GM supercharger makes about 45-50 hp, 40 ft-lbs.

So the Z24 would likely make close to 185-190 hp, about 190 ft-lbs.

Which is slightly short of the Cobalt's hp/torque ratings. Also the Supercharged Cobalt is actually slightly under rated, hp wise. .

But then the 02 Z24 is about 100 lbs lighter than the supercharged Cobalt.

Still you'll like need at least a good performance exhaust kit, in addition to the supercharger, to actually come close to matching the Cobalt in power & acceleration..

A 2002 could have had either the 2200, 2.4 or Eco.

Think of it this way. You're adding 25-35% more power. I think it's safe to say you're really going to notice it.

Thanks guys. I'm pretty sure my car has the 2.4 engine, though. Not the Ecotec. The engine has "2.4L Twin Cam" stamped on it. The '02 may have come with the Ecotec as you say, but I already know my car is actually somewhat of a rarity. It's basically an '01 Z24 but it carries the '02 model year for some reason. The dealership I bought it from didn't know what to make of it either because they specs they had for the car didn't match up to what the '02 model should've been. And I've had that problem whenever I take my car in for routine service. Now I just tell them it's an '01 to avoid any confusion because they would almost always come back saying "you're sure this is an '02 model?" One dealership told me that Chevy didn't even make the Z24 in '02 according to their information, supposedly '01 was the last year of them. Anyone know about all this actually, I'm curious now...

Anyway, back to the issue at hand, I still would like to have some idea of how much this would cost me to get the supercharger installed at a dealership...

the z24 us spec was in production until march of 2002 then they made the ls sport from there on out and used the ecotec engine.

Thanks, that's what I thought. Maybe some of the people at the dealerships I've taken my car to are just not in the know. Who knows I guess....

Anyway, I would still really like to know if anyone has any idea or a ballpark figure for the installation cost of this supercharger from a dealership?

You'd have to call a dealership and ask, it would vary...

If you are ordering the kit online, the cheapest place is paceperformance.com

Dealerships will charge you an arm and a leg to get that thing installed. I had mine done with a few friends over a sunday afternoon. Mind you, I did have to get the GM flash from the dealer - that cost me nothing cause the service advisor is a family friend.

I added a few goodies to my set-up, motor mounts, bushings, custom CAI, full 2.25 exhaust system, upgraded injectors (Cobalt SS/SC Stage 2's), custom lightened oversized crank pulley and a 2.7 blower pulley. With those, I got the car to 196hp and 191lb.ft. torque - not too bad for a bar that stock was 132hp. She'll keep up with stock cobalts no problem now and it launches rather nice.

If your getting the kit, be prepared to spend a lot more later on - boost is addictive. My wallet tells me that almost everyday.

Yeah, I'll eventually have to ask a dealership but again, whatever they quote me is going to be garbage. They'll continually jack up the price as they do the installation because as the customer, what can you do? They can basically charge the customer whatever the hell they want to. So the supercharger itself seems reasonable, but I'm worried about what it's going to cost me to install it.

How is paceperformance.com cheaper than gmpartsdirect.com? It's about $800 more from pacepeformance.com, so I don't understand why you're saying that it's cheaper. With shipping it's still about $500 cheaper through gmpartsdirect.com.

Be prepared to spend a lot more later on, eh? In my situation that's not an issue. As I said, I'm just looking to make my Z24 a more potent car while I wait 2-3 years to get a WRX. So this would be the only thing I do to the Z24 in that time. Not looking to make a money pit out of that car. Just want to make it more powerful in the meantime, because as I said before, a stock Z24 really is a dog and I'm tired of it.

I stand corrected.

The '02 Z24 had both 2.4L Twin Cams. The "LS Sport" (which replaced Z24) had the Ecotec.

The '02 Z24s were built built before the end of 2001, (They were actually early '02 models). Those built later in the 2002 model year, with the ecotecs, look like Z24, but has the LS Sport badging instead of the Z24 badging, if I recall correctly.

And the GM Supercharger for the 2.4L is rated at 200 hp & 195 ft-lb.

Thanks for the info kj1168. I'm going to head to my local dealer tomorrow and see what the installation cost would be for the supercharger....hope it's reasonable....

GM Parts direct is NOT cheaper than pace....GM Parts Direct charges a percentage of your purchase for shipping and it works out to be well over the total price from Pace.

check your vin 8th digit

4 - 2.2 OHV

T - 2.4 DOHC

F - ecotec

2002.5+ had the ecotec,, I swear they just had to use up the stock LD9 engines first.

I still don't understand how you guys are saying paceperformance.com is cheaper than gmpartsdirect.com! At gmpartsdirect.com, the total WITH shipping comes to about $1,700. The BASE price WITHOUT shipping at paceperformance.com is almost $2,200! I'm no math major, but from my calculations $1,700 is cheaper than $2,200.

Just to be ultra-clear, here are the prices including shipping for the 2.4L Twin Cam Supercharger part #12498660 :

I think - from what I've read on other postings - the highest recorded HP from a LD9 (2.4L TC) with M45 charger is about 215-230 whp. Keep in mind that this includes some engine build up, and possibly alcohol injection(intercooler); as well.

But still - that comes out to be about 260- 280 hp at the crank . Which fairly impressive,

Okay, I've called all the local dealerships that are listed as GM Performance Parts dealers and none of them will help. One even told me they weren't a GM Performance Parts dealer and I said "well according to their website you are" and the guy stammered a bit and then hung up on me. One dealer said they will not install that because "they don't have the technical know-how to do that". Huh? You're a GM dealership installing a GM part! And yet another dealer said they would call me back with the labor costs, but I'm pretty sure they have no intention of calling me back considering that was over an hour ago and the guy on the phone just didn't seem like he cared.

So apparently I can't even get a straight answer from an authorized GM Performance Parts dealer for the installation cost. Great service from these people, let me tell you. How much does it cost to install this?! Anyone?!

Heh Tony, I bought the supercharger from gm parts direct with no problems. Its being installed right now and should be finished this week. I took it to a local shop that specializes in turbos and superchargers, and they were very helpful. I have a 99 Z so they installed wideband gauges and are waiting for a SAFC to complete the job. No reflash. I recommend taking it to a local shop, not a GM dealer. Its not cheap though. The SAFC is 600 canadian alone on top of the gauges and labor. I cant give you a total on what I paid until I get the final bill. Hope my tax return covers it. Cheers.

wade jarvis put down 214whp with his 02 z24 2.4 with the GMSC kit, 56mm TB, CAI, and engine mounts. he also had his VCM custom tuned by shifted tuning. NOTHING more.

i would honestly say, he could hit AT LEAST 230whp with a full exhuast, aluminum crank pulley and the 2.7" blower pulley.

I hope you got all the parts needed to make the kit work on a 99 with the EGR plate. If not, ah oh.

Tony, the kit has the best instructions I have ever seen ... I mean, full colour diagrams and pics, anyone who knows their way around a car can do this install in like 5 hours. Best option, find someone close to you who knows the LD9, perhaps worked at a dealer and get them to help you.

I had BlownBlackZ, Sweetness and IntriguingSunfire help me and Flipspeed installed two blowers in 4 hours. It went pretty damn smooth, even after all that damn food and beer.

Going back to what I said about watch out spending more money to make it go faster. I said the same thing two years ago "I'm not going to spend more on this car, i'm going to save up for an Acura TL." Two years later, I wasted more on the cavy and am no where near close to buying my sweet Acura ... damn boosted car LOL

Yes if you put it on yoyu will be about even with a cobalt ss sc. It is well worth 1400 dollars. You can install this yourself. Don't be scared. It is not that hard. It comes with pretty good instructions. If you do have any ?s I am willing to help you. I doubt your insurance will cover any aftermarket modification.
