what turbo would be the best fit for drag 1/4 mile
Tuesday, July 04, 2006 11:08 PM
ok there has been alot of debate on what would be the best turbo for this setup for running the best 1/4 mile times on the track granted will have good slick tires and weld tractions bars etc to make sure there as least amount of wheel spin as possible put look at the site and look at the specs on the motor the motor and tranny are pretty well built for the most part and wanting the best turbo for the job has garret gt30r right now but thinking it might be too big here is the link to look at the specs thanks http://www.cardomain.com/ride/2200866 considering either garret gt28rs, gt30r, gt35r

im personally going with the gt28rs, sure it only flows 350whp but at the same time it will allow you full boost by 3000rpm no problem and then if you build your motor you dont have to buy another turbo

thats what im going with, if anyone disagrees please explain so i too can learn from this

You can get a bigger turbo that spool faster and can give you more power if you want to.

What did you do to the 4t40e tranny to support 500hp?

Haha, if you are going strictly for having a fast drag car, neither of those will do the trick. think of something like a 62-1. At that point, lag really isnt an issue. Drag car, right?

All the turbos you listed should be able to spool to full boost just by brake torquing when you are staged since you have a auto.

The GT28RS is most likely too small, its more of a turbo you would use to road racing or autoX where there is a lot of stop and go and lag could hurt your performance. Its small turbine will limit peak hp, which isn't ideal for a car built for drag racing.

The GT30R and GT35R are both probably better choices, which one you need more so depends on your target hp. With either one i'd recommend a .82 a/r turbine for peak hp and the fact that you're using a auto trans.

oh man your gonna have that huge gt35r turbo, that things mad fast man, i heard if you get it you will run 10's at least. man i wish i was cool enough for one of those, but i guess running low 11's on a small hybrid turbo is cool enough for me.

the gt28rs is good for 350whp, and with quick spool up and being able to pull to redline what makes it not as an ideal choice for 1/4 ?

The small turbine makes it less ideal for a drag race car, just like a GT35R with a .82 a/r turbine is less ideal for a street car.

The reason being, the smaller the turbine the faster the turbo will spool. The bigger the turbine the higher the peak hp will be.

apparently time slips are too cool for you too.

thats something your not really gonna want if your going for times on the strip. You want top end power so once you take off from the tree all you have is pure pulling power thru the upper rpms. since smaller turbos spool fast in the lower rpms they dont get that huge pull need in the upper rpms were your going to be after you take off. plus with a small turbo its going to make it hard to take off quickly cause your going to be concerned about spinning off the line a lot

what would you suggest turbo wise then?

depends on your budget but if your going all out i think the gt30 or gt 35 would do great. im planning on going gt30 once i rebuild the motor. another option you could do is twin charge since you have the supercharger already and use the gt35 and you would have no problem spooling that turbo for sure.

what would the spool time be at roughly for the gt30?

Re: what turbo would be the best fit for drag 1/4

thats hard to tell theres no set spool time for any turbo. lets say for example I go and slap a gt30 on my car and i get full spool at 4000rpms. and then lest say I do some porting to my head, cams, bigger valves, and all the other valve train goodies. well the extra flow of the head work may drop the max spool time to 3500rpms now. now lets say you rebuild the bottom half and put .020 over bore pistons in thats gonna help with spool also.

ALL THAT WAS GUESSING THOSE EXACT NUMBERS SHOULD BE USED FOR REFERENCE

but anyways do you understand what i was trying to tell you. everything you have for getting air into and out of the motor is gonna affect how the turbo functions. Consider doing a header style turbo manifold too cause that will help spool the turbo too. From what I was told Brandon Fetters could probably help you out with a turbo header.

GT30 flows the same max #'s of air/min as a T3/T4 .60/63, 60 trim turbo. That's what I would say is ideal for a beast of a street car, GT 35 for all out drag racing, or if you shell out the cash for a turbo header.

O noes!

from looking at the atp turbo website the gt30 is good for 500whp, i will never come close to that and was wondering if that would still be an ideal turbo...

my logic which might be wrong was the gt28rs would be a good turbo for me especially on stock internals cause it will spool quick and should pull to redline and then once my engine is built, i can still use the turbo for up to 350whp

LAFNGAS, My vote is still for the GT28RS on a stock motor. It should make near instant boost and have plenty of compressor to pull til redline. Its probably the best turbo you can buy for a street driven, stock motor j body, if you can afford it.

if thats all you plan to run the it would be a good idea. personally if thats what you want then get it... I just thought i would shed my knowledge of boost to you. I know some of it might be off a bit but its the general idea that helps IMHO. I wish you the best of luck and will keep track of your boost project.

I just assumed you would be better off with the gt30 cause it would be decent for stock on low boost then when you rebuild the motor you would have a good turbo to blow the doors off the car.

for a drag car that may still be daily driven...but not comfortably, from stock internals to all out balls to the walls on a 2.4....what would work the best from your experiences guys....? I read the whole thing but i am still not sure as far as you guys are conserned. Thanks in advance

Yeah im pretty much confused on what turbo to go with as well.. I want a beast of a street car, yet something that tears up the track as well Of course on a fully built motor

i have a 60 trim, and everything else on my car is stock (preformance wise) and i ran a 14.4 at 5 psi and a 14.0 at 8.5w/meth injection, it has worked pretty good for me so far!! i think i made a good choice . . . . i drive my car daily too
