Well I started this morning and still not done.
So the head went on like butter but the Camshaft position sensor that sits on the exhaust cam hits the master cylinder.
I took it off and sat the head and Torqued it.
Did the timing and valve cover and all the other stuff.
Now the intake manifold bolts are fatter and won't fit through our manifold but I am about to fix that in the morning just ran out of time and stuff.
It is a pretty forward swap I got 24 exposure camera and taking all kinds of pics for you guys.
I should be done with it in the morning and I am also wiring in or trying to wire the 4 individual coils .
Well pics will be soon.

no im pretty sure it just flows more air than the L61 head.

When I develop.
I could swap the VVT head but I have no ECU to be able to recognize it

well that sucks about the cam sensor
guess i shoulda said something about the bolt holes being bigger , sorry about that
i had to tap the holes in the 2.2 head on my g/fs cav for the eco s/c
Just get the correct bolts for the head from the dealer or a decent bolt/screw place.
I thought the cam posistion sensor could potentially be an issue, making a blockoff plate possibly?
Is there any real proof that this head is any better than the 2.2 head, aside from hearsay?

Not that I know of.. we do know the valves are sodium filled...
We dont know for sure if cam profiles are different either.. so this is basically just a test
he is doing it for strength because whenw e run 20+ psi the ends of the stock 2.2 head lifts up
LE61T PTE6262 Powered
Well 97 Cavi JDM intake manifold will NOT fit neither.
The blowers manifold WILL fit the L61 head but ours won't fit their head since that breather hole in our head is in the middle and theirs is towards the top the flange off the manifold does not reach it fully.
So I cannot put the manifold on now, nice. So I am not even gonna worry about drilling the holes and what not if the damn manifold don't fit. Son of a .....
I am gonna go and see if I can get the cam sensor to fit.

you can try the SAAB turbo manifold its a cast aluminum intake
you do need to modify it since the intake isnt set up for a cable throttle body , 1 hole is way off , other 3 fit
pm snowman he has the intake on his cav and knows the part #
the exhaust valves are sodium filled , and the head is sand cast , where the 2.2 head is foam cast

Ever think about just using ARP studs? That's what I did and have no lift at 16PSI
I used to race cars, now I race myself.

a completely stock head I could see that maybe happening to, however one thats machined such as the GM race head or the patriot head I couldnt see this happening too , after all the GM race head is used by guys running a whole lot more than that tiny 20some psi that anyone on here is using and they dont have any probems making 600-700-800 hp. The patriot has even higher flow numbers than the Gm race head sold for the 2.2 L61, I dunno seems like putting on a head actually made for the engine would be alot easier and produce much better numbers
1989 Turbo Trans Am #82, 2007 Cobalt SS G85
Tiny 20+ psi, lol.
Anyways all the GM Racing heads that are sold are already studed so hence why there is NO problem on that head.
16 psi or 38 psi is irrelevant it is the hp and the static compression that accompanies HP making process that will lift the head.
I never lifted the head, will I, I don't think I will.
Do I want the headache?? Hell no, I already had the head chilling here.
Anyways, solved a few problems.
I grinded the crap out of master cylinder to make the cam angle sensor fit, why blocking it iff when that is one of the reasons why I swapped to this head so I can run AEM EMS.
Fixed that.
As for manifold I trimmed the manni flange to the point where the whole hole is exposed and drove a fitting in it so now I can run a hose and circulate it back into the manifold or whatever.
As for bolts being too big I just pulled the metal thingies out for the time being and I am gonna run it like that just to try it and make sure it works.
Fuel rail fits, saved me the fact that LSJ and 2002 L61 rails are almost the same except for no return, I don't think 03-05 would fit on the head.
Now I just have to hook up the coils bolt on the Turbo and try to start it.
I don't know anything about Patriot head weather they have the issue fixed or not so I cannot say there.
Everybody talks like GM is full of crap and don't believe that the lost foam head lifts, well put enough HP through it and watch it blow a head gasket.
It is inevitable in a stock head without work done.
Will most of people have problems with it?? I don't think anyone will?? Since noone is at the point, 16 psi sure as hell won't do it or 23, or sure as hell 8-9 psi from a GM blower.
Going back to work guys.

As for coils if anyone cares.
I think they will work just hook them up to ICM and they should be OK.
I just wired some things in I still have to find a Ground(very hard lol) and a Low Reference.
Now, if anyone can tell me weather the MAP sensor TPS, IAC or IAT sensors have Low reference and which color wire it is that would be awesome????
I know crank position sensor has Low Reference and some of the other ones but I want a sensor that is easy to get to.
Should say in the HAYNES wirinf manual.
Going to work now so tomorrow should be THE day.

keep up the great work !
15.574 @ 89 mph stock without charger. new times with charger coming soon.
tps 5v ref is the middle wire, will have the check color when I get home. As for the rest I'd have to pull out the volt meter.
wow... grinding the master cylinder... trying to figure out what wires do what in the middle of a swap.... not even knowing if anything on this head is even any better than the 2.2 head besides sodium filled valves..... sounds like we really worked hard to prepare for this project.....

where's the fun in preperation
Am I doing an open heart surgery here or a damn head swap????
Big deal, as stated above where is the fun in preperation.
1st thing.
Valves ARE better.
Head is already studed.
Cams have no overlap, and are better suited for FI apps.
Head gasket is better, already sprayed copper, and a 3 layer opposed to 2.
You have a cam angle sensor which will help you with any engine management.
4 individual coils.
It is sand cast stronger overall.
And the last but not least it was FREE and BRAND NEW!!! So why the hell NOT swap to it.
Also Scarab, you mentioned something about me figuring out the wires as I am going, I have figured them out already and I hooked them up but that ONE wire.
And I just tryed to ask a few people thinking maybe they will know to save me a few minutes of looking crap up.
So I am trying to understand where is the part that I am NOT prepared here.
If you didn't like my post about swapping head, too bad.

jaz that sounds like a good idea if it will work. Why dont you look into it? Or will it fit?
