Need help with decision about when to turbo
Tuesday, April 18, 2006 5:58 PM
Yeah, so I dropped my motor off at the machine shop today and my plan is to put the 2.4 motor in after its done and THEN turbo the car in a couple months..
Now my friend brought up a good point.. "Why build the motor, then put it in the car without the turbo"?
He suggest since the motor is already out of the car, why dont I just wait until I get the turbo setup, hook it up to the engine then put it in the car?
He has a 2.4L turbo as well so he knows how hard it is to install..

What are your inputs on this? is it that hard to install the kit while the motor is in the car already? Or should I just do the swap plus the turbo kit all at once?

Thanks guys.

Well, how long would it take you to get all the parts you need for the turbo? if you already have them, or can live with not having the car running for the time it would take to get the parts, the sure, put it in when you install the engine, if that is easier. The problem with doing that is, the engine needs to be broke in on a good a/f ratio, and some driving conditions. If you put the turbo on, you may not be able to break it in correctly since you wouldn't be able to hold the revs right after the first firing, or drive it around concentrating on breaking in the motor. You'd be trying to get a good tune, and a good a/f ratio. I'd suggest you break the motor in first, and then install the turbo...

OR you could install the turbo, and just not connect the charge pipe to the intake manifold, just direct the charged air somewhere it can blow out without blowing something away, or heating it up. Then, once the motor is broken in, you can install the larger injectors, connect the charge pipe to the throttle body, and tune the turbo setup.

The only thing you'll be able to put on the motor out of the car is the manifold and turbo. The motor has to be in the car to run your charge pipes and fuel modifications.

You're never going to get the engine in the car with the turbo on it anyway, it'll all have to be pulled apart to put it in.

Im breaking my engine in for 1000miles before installing the turbo... before the engine ever sees boost, the rings and valves need to seat properly, and the cams need to break in as well. Unlike F&F where you can just fire up a new motor and go race a ferrari, in real life, you have to take it slow or things will quickly turn south.

I'll be breaking mine in with the turbo on.

Honestly if you have the option break it in N/A and then toss the turbo on - it is NOT that much harder to put the turbo in with the motor in the car, just have a pre-tapped and welded spare pan and all the parts and you can get it all on in 3-4 days.

Good luck man!

nobody even brought up this point yet. |

what if the motor is @!#$, but you decided to put the turbo on to break it in. so you sit there thinking that its the turbo messing up and you put all your thought into that and don't realize that you messed up something on the actual motor, not in the turbo system.
I'd put the motor in first, make sure everything is alright for about a tank of gas or so ( about proper break in time for a new motor anyways) then boost the @!#$ outta it.

Thanks guys, see your thinking of what I was thinking.. I wanted to put in the motor after it's built, make sure the engine is running right rather than putting the turbo kit on the car and if something goes wrong I won't be guessing if its the turbo or the motor.

So I'll do what I was thinking of doing, and that is to run N/A for a little while, break in the engine. At the same time that gives me time to collect my turbo parts

Again, thanks for your input.

Well I will be swapping my engine and turboing it before I drive the car. I will however do the initial start up with it NA just to make sure all my wiring is good and that the motor is alright. Then before I drive it I will be installing the turbo.
Oh, and for the person that said you have to remove the turbo to install the engine, no you don't, we got SunfighterGT's 2.4 out from the top with the turbo still installed and thats how we will be putting it back in.
