only 5 psi in first, second, and third............
Saturday, April 01, 2006 4:47 AM
I noticed when I start from a stop and tach out every gear I only 5 psi in first, second, and third. What would cause this problem? The wastegate is set at 8 psi and when I am in third just driving at about 3000 Rpm I can give it wot and it will go to 8 psi. I am thinkin that the compressor is not big enough. I am running T3 .42 / .48. I have another compressor, wheel and backplate for it ( .60 ) but my heater hoses were too short and rubbing on it pretty good. Thanks in advance for any input.

Boost leak, too small of an exhaust, exhaust leak before the turbo, pinched vac line, incorrectly placed vac line, etc.

yeah could be a boost leak, that would be my frist guess. If you cant get it past 5 PSI ant anytime what so ever, its most likely a boost leak. Id check the gauge first, thats where i had my boost leak from.

where is your wastegate line hooked up at???

I have an adjustable internal wastegate from turbonetics. In fourth gear I can get it to go up to 8 psi. The line from the wastegate goes directly into the the fitting on the compressor and is about 6 inches long. When i have it in fourth and the engine is around 3k I can hold it at 8 psi. I'm pretty sure its not a leak. I also have an RFL BOV. The vac line is coing into my HO manifold.

change the vacume line from the turbo to one of the lines from the tb..
I did that to mine and bot a better control of boost... the compressor see's more boost then the tb i promise you

I changed the vac line going to the wastegate and put it on the manifold, now I get a steady 8 psi until redline. Sometimes it will spike to about 9 1/2 psi. Is there anything I can do to cut that down at all.

spiking is usually a result of a bad wastegate spring....
what is the gate spring rated at ......

if it is rated at 5 and your seeing 8 and up....... it's spiking and not functioning 100%......
if it's rated at 8 and going to 9 - 9.5 in high gears..... thats completely normal......

internal gates do that in higher gears and RPM.... externals tend to say where you set them.......

mine does that high 3rd and in forth......

When an internal gate can't flow enough air (like internals often can't), the exhaust will have to go through the turbine, causing a boost spike. DSM guys often manage to port out the wastegate flapper housing to allow to flapper open further (sometimes it hits the housing first, impeding flow).
