White smoke out of exhaust during idle
Thursday, February 23, 2006 1:45 PM
Ok so I have a turbocharger thats why I am posting here and I was wondering any other turbo guys had this problem. When I sit idleing for a few minutes sometimes, I will get white smoke out of the exhaust. I just had headwork done on the car and do not think that is the problem but it could be. I have a cometic head gasket on the car with arp studs. I just got an oil change too and the mechanic did not see anything no leaks or anything. I have a minor transmission leak but it is very small seepage. Though I did not notice the smoke until today so the mechanic was not looking for that. Let me know if you guys have ever run into this problem.

during idle? hmmmm, check your plugs, should all be nice and brown, (white is really bad, and then you have found your problem) if all consistant move to the o2 sensor, should be brown too, if white, then I would shoot for a turbo seal.

Is your turbo water cooled? does you exhaust smell sweet (like antifreeze), does it smoke ONLY at idle, with a warm engine or cold?

Today it was warmed up. Its got this weird smell but I do not know how to describe it. It was only a little smoke and it was only when it had sat for a bit. I was waiting to turn I saw it and then when I got to the car wash it did it a little again. It would do it then stop and the exhaust would be normal. When I got home though I let it sit and no smoke. My turbo is not water cooled.

Could be a blown head gasket... Just an idea though... are you losing coolant?

does the smoke smell sweet? if so it is antifreeze. if you just had head work done then i would say it sounds like you headgasket got pinched or is just blown between cylinders and you are buring antifreeze. by the way antifreeze burns white. oil burns blue. just my thoughts.

my car was smoking white at idle and it was a blown turbo seal.. check ur downpipe for oil.. if theres oil in the downpipe... its probably the turbo seal

here comes the boost!

No the antifreeze level is fine it has not changed. But I did notice before the last oil change I was losing a litte bit of oil. I will check the down pipe. I really do not want to think its the headgasket <prayer>. I have blown a headgasket and it was a lot more smoke and it was all the time. I hope it is not though. I am going out of town this weekend though...hope the cavy makes it lol

You have a bad turbo (bad seals), too much oil being fed to yuor turbo, a problem with your turbo oil return, or a badly performing crank case evactuation turbo.

GUARANTEED it is one of those 4 things or a combination of them. Trust me I have a lot expierence in the area. First thing is to check for shaftplay on your turbo. Then flowtest your oil return see how much oil you're getting at idle. There is a spec for how much oil should be flowing thru the turbo at idle with low pressure etc. But I would assume it's your turbo first off.

well,

I saw this as soon as I read the post......

You have a cosmetic head gasket......

did you o-ring the block ?????? if not, theres your problem.........................

white smoke, isn't oil, when my turbo seals blew it was blue smoke (oil smoke).

I sure as @!#$ hope you didn't put in a copper head gasket and didn't o-ring the block.

do I need to modify my block to use a cometic head gasket????

okay, all "company names aside"

when you install a copper head gasket, you MUST o-ring the block, or it will leak. simple as that. this is why I don't understand how a shop would install a copper gasket on a car, and not suggest a block o-ringing...... just plain dumb.

and the answer is....... your wrong, cometic head gasket is a mls (multi-layered-steel)headgasket, there is no need to o ring the block or head with this gasket

Correct. No need to Oring for a copper gasket either. There are cars that come stock with copper gaskets like the 2.2 OHC version of my engine that was in brazillian trucks, and they aren't oringed.

I meant on a 2200.... I don't know about other motors, other cars, etc.......

But good info, thanks for correcting me.

i hate to kind of thread jack but you guys said it might be because of inadequate crankcase ventalation .. what would be a way to get proper ventilation on the 2.4l?

i believe what protonus is refuring to is on the 2.4 there is a very small hole for the pcv and when people install the 2.3 intake manifold blocks the hole off not allowing the pcv to work correctly, i know this is a problem i have to take care of cause i was in to big of a hurry putting my car together that i forgot to drill and install a vaccuum nipple in the head and run it to a vacuum sorce on my intake mani
