My Topfeed Conversion 90% done (no 56k)

Well, today I embarked on a journey into the unknown..NO, not that unknown... the unknown world of top feed conversions on Pre'98 LN2's. I had a plan all along of NOT using the pissy 2200 fuel rail. I almost got to the point of giving up and using it, but @!#$ it, I just kept grinding. What I used instead was a 2.3HO fuel rail (its pretty much the same as a 2.4 fuel rail, IIRC) I measured it up in the fall and to my surprise the rail has the same spacing for its injectors that my intake ports do.

without further ado, I give you what I call a Top Feed Conversion. 90% complete.

what you do see missing in the above pics is a pair of support brackets, which will be added onto the rail to hold it snuggly against the manifold. They will be welded on once the bungs are secured in place.

And now, the carnage I had to go through to do it the way I did... this was absolutely necessary to do if I wanted to use the 2.3 rail. I thought about buying an RKSport rail, but didn't like the thought of welding onto a new part. This took me about 8 hours in total to get the injectors sitting at the right height and everything.

remember, things are just in rough form right now, including the fuel rail and the holes for the bungs. Once I get some welding happening, I'll be cleaning it up. You really wont be able to see much once she's on the engine and the chargepipe is installed across it.

thanks for looking... I've got my flamesuit in hand...

This whole process cost me $70... $50 for 8 bosch style injector bungs, and $20 for the fuel rail from the wreckers.

I should mention that I'm using an Aeromotive Universal Adjustable Fuel Pressure Regulator, which ran me about $160CDN shipped. Also the fittings I got were free, and I grabbed up some AN-6 stainless braided hose from work. (that will go between the rail and the FPR)

What did you use to open up the origional injector bores?
dremel?

I used an air (die) grinder with an aluminum burr. I'm not sure a dremel could last long enough, or have enough power behind it.

thanks for the.... compliments? lol

i like it. mass produce it and i'll buy one

S.W.E.E.T.
still can't believe you shot for the 2.3 rail...and yeah, it's the same as a 2.4L (except my 2.3 also has a schrader valve on the fpr)

thanks man, it was definately a lot more work then a 2200 rail, but I think this is going to work very well.

I love the aeromotive fpr, its gonna look great under the hood too

stevefire-

Looks great, man! And that's the exact FPR I'm going with, too--and it looks even BETTER with the gauge screwed on to the front! (Lower right-hand corner, below)

It does look good. but if anyone is interested in a mass produced sheet metal top feed let me know. I already have one running on my car very succesfully for two years now and i'm to the point where i'll start making more. I have pics if interested.

^^^that mani looks pretty good, big-ass plenum. Reminds me a lot of the Hogans. How much would you ask for a sheet aluminum mani like that?

I can built one identical to mine for 700 shipped. But remember mine is using an LS1 throttle body, so if you want something else used you'll have to get me the tb. And yes it does flow alot of air!!!

if only there was a way to utilize my intake manifold but use an upgraded plenum that flows a bit better.. any ideas?

Todd that looks great, how much power are you putting down?

Stevefire you really need to e-mail me. I think i have exactly what you may want.

Todd, you've got mail.

Agent Omega, that is quite the impressive engine bay!

I've got a gauge to use on my FPR already

Steve, I know Emry made a spacer between his upper and lower manis (it was for fuel rail clearance). You could use a really thick spacer, which would increase your plenum volume. Unfortunately, you're still stuck with a 59mm MAX TB, which is obviously fixed w/ Todd's mani.

actually Todd and I worked out a deal, he had a plenum upgrade which uses the 2.3HO TB and holds quite a bit more air.

Thanks again Todd for the hookup.

Stevefire, all I can say is holy #$%&! You did a lot of work to open them injector holes up, no question about it. I bought a 63/64" drill bit which would open the holes large enough for a typical injector to fit correctly. But it looks like we'll be leaving it in the box when building top feed intakes. With a little discussion it seems there's a better, faster way than opening the small diameter then resetting the tool to open the large diameter holes. But it's been slow going, so no pics or serious progress yet (I did open one of the holes up and install an LT1 injector for test fit).

Keep going. You might want to pressure test with air and soapy water before applying fuel... just in case there's a leak.

Plenum and TB are more beneficial on NA engines.

It sounds like the injectors are at a different angle now thanks to the fuel rail? If so, don't forget to bolt that intake to a head to check for unrestricted line-of-sight path from injectors to valves.

-->Slow

Boosted engines don't see anywhere near the gains found by adding a larger plenum to an NA engine.

injectors are definately at a different angle then they were, I'll be sure to bolt it all together to ensure we're getting the fuel into the port at a reasonable angle.

I will be running batch fire unfortunately because the haltech does not support SFI.

I know my way is not the most effecient means to do the top feed, but at this point I'm certain its going to be heaps better then my side feeds. At least now I have injector selection's to choose from. I didn't want to use a 2200 rail, I believe I have more 'workability' with the 2.3 rail. In terms of welding support brackets, tapping for fuel pressure if need be, and also welding/installing AN fittings is much easier into aluminum then it is tin.

anything has got to be better then my tiny little stock TB.

I can't count how many times I brought that up in the last top-feed thread...I'm still skeptical in that area.
For anyone who's unsure of what we're talking about, here's a shot of an intake port on a 2.2L. This is exactly what the injector sees the way Steve has it set up:

As you can see, there is not a straight-shot from the injector to the valve as there should be. However, consider the velocity of the incoming air, it may just 'go with the flow'.
