I just put a clarion pro audio deck into my car but i still have stock speakers and i have a quick question. When i crank it all the way up and it distorts, is that the speakers or is that the deck? what benefits would i get if i replaced my stock speakers with something like an alpine type r setup?

it's actually both, but you'll hear it in the speakers first. Benefits of new speakers, are much better clarity over stock, and the ability to take a bit more power from your aftermarket deck.
pioneer is the way to go if your looking for aftermarket speakers. i cut out a hole and put 2 6x9's in my doors for my 96 z24. sounds great
if you can afford a clarion, I say go with Infinity, Polk, or Alpine. They are awesome brands.
