box build help...
Saturday, July 26, 2008 8:57 PM
ok im buy a new subwoofer and im building another box. the box will fit the power acoustik MOFO (i know alot of people dont like PA but dont bother me about it im happy with them, keep it about the box). anywas it need 2 ports that are 3inch by 6.75 long. my question in figuring out the box size is do i incorporate the port volume in the cu ft, or do i leave it out? same with the sub do i figure out the subwoofers volume(aproximate) and detract it from the boxes cubic foot? sorry if it make no sense.

WHOA the port is going to displace inside your box. as is the displacement of the woofer. you will need to subtract the port and woofer displacement from your total volume in order to get a correct box volume. if you dont you are going to run a box that is far smaller in volume for the port you have and it is going to raise tuning and sound like booty hole.

with that much of adifference, it shoulnt throw your tuning off by more than around 5 hertz, you wont be able to notice the difference in 5 hetz.

not even. the ports are what are gonna change the tuning and a .025 cube difference isnt gonna make any difference whatsoever

maybe I was exagerating a bit when I said 5 hertz, but it would make a difference, the point is, the difference it would make, you would never be able to notice.

^thats what i was gonna suggest..... i arn 2 circle ports for my 15s but it was casue i was limited on space and couldnt get a slot port tuned high enough

you will be happier with a slot port, or if u insist on a circle port invest in some aero ports

Use 3/4" MDF, not particle board, and definitely not 3/8" anything.

Yes, it's too thin...it could possibly resonate causing distortion or cancellation issues. 3/4" isn't more than a couple bucks more than 5/8" either. Almost all custom boxes use 3/4" and some use 1". I always feel that when it comes to building a box, it's better safe than sorry...it really sucks having to rebuild a box after your just finished making it, trust me.

mmmmmm 1". my dad built a box for his 15 inch l7 with 1" mdf. awesome theft resistor cuz the box is heavy as @!#$ now.
